About the Reading Time
The Reading Time calculator estimates how long a text will take to read from its word count and your chosen reading speed in words per minute. It displays the estimate in minutes and seconds and in decimal minutes, plus a separate speaking-time estimate at a fixed 130 words per minute.
- Word count
- The total number of words in the text you plan to read, entered in words with a default of 1500.
- Reading speed (words/min)
- Your estimated reading pace in words per minute, with a default of 200.
Formula and method
T = W / R; S = round(60 × T); M = floor(S / 60); s = S − 60 × M; P = W / Rₛ, where Rₛ = 130 words/min. With the defaults: T = 1500 / 200 = 7.5 min; S = 450 sec, giving M = 7 min and s = 30 sec; P = 1500 / 130 ≈ 11.5 min.
- WTotal word count of the text, in words.
- RSelected reading speed, in words per minute.
- TEstimated reading duration, in decimal minutes.
- SEstimated reading duration converted to total seconds and rounded to the nearest whole second.
- MWhole-minute portion of the minutes-and-seconds reading-time display.
- sRemaining seconds after the whole minutes are removed.
- RₛFixed speaking pace of 130 words per minute.
- PEstimated speaking duration, in minutes, displayed to one decimal place.
Divide the word count by the reading speed to obtain decimal minutes. Convert that duration to seconds, round to a whole second, and split it into whole minutes and remaining seconds for the reading-time display. Separately divide the word count by 130 to estimate speaking time, then round that result to one decimal place.

Inputs
- Word count1500
- Reading speed200 words/min
Results
- Reading time7 min 30 sec
- Minutes7.5
- Speaking time (130 wpm)11.5 min
How to use the Reading Time
- 1Determine the word count of the text you intend to read.
- 2Enter that total in Word count; leave the default at 1500 to follow the worked example.
- 3Enter your estimated Reading speed (words/min); use the default of 200 for the worked example.
- 4Review Reading time and Minutes: the defaults give 7 min 30 sec and 7.5 minutes.
- 5Check Speaking time (130 wpm) if you plan to read aloud: the default word count gives 11.5 minutes.
Reading your result
Reading time expresses the estimated duration as minutes and seconds: 7 min 30 sec with the default inputs. Minutes expresses the same duration as decimal minutes: 7.5, where the fractional 0.5 minute equals 30 seconds. Speaking time (130 wpm) is a separate estimate for delivering the text aloud at the fixed speaking pace: 11.5 min, rounded to one decimal place.
Limitations
The calculator assumes a constant pace through all counted words. Text difficulty, unfamiliar vocabulary, language proficiency, rereading, and distractions can change actual reading time. The speaking estimate does not separately account for pauses, emphasis, audience interaction, or slide changes. Use a nonnegative word count and a reading speed greater than zero; zero words gives zero duration. Displayed precision does not guarantee that a reader will finish at exactly the estimated time.
Common questions
Why does the calculator show both 7 min 30 sec and 7.5 minutes?+
They are two formats for the same reading duration. Dividing 1500 words by 200 words per minute gives 7.5 minutes, and the fractional half-minute is 30 seconds.
Does changing my reading speed also change the speaking-time estimate?+
No. Reading speed affects the reading-time outputs, while speaking time uses the word count and a fixed pace of 130 words per minute.
Is the default 200 words per minute the right speed for every text?+
No. It is a starting assumption, not a measured personal pace. For a more useful estimate, time yourself reading comparable material and divide the words read by the elapsed minutes.
Should headings, footnotes, and captions be included in the word count?+
Include any words you intend to read. For an aloud estimate, count only the text you intend to speak; silent review of notes or pauses will need additional time.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
