About the Percent Off Calculator

The Percent Off Calculator computes the discounted sale price of an item and the total amount saved based on an original price and a percentage discount. Shoppers and retail managers use it to quickly evaluate promotions, clearance markdowns, and sales deals.

Price
The original regular retail price of the item before discount, in dollars (typically zero or greater).
Percent off
The discount rate applied to the original price, expressed as a percentage (typically between 0% and 100%).

Formula and method

Savings = Price × (Percent off / 100)
Sale price = Price × (1 − Percent off / 100)
  • PriceThe pre-discount price of the item in dollars
  • Percent offThe discount rate as a percentage value
  • SavingsThe total dollar amount deducted from the original price
  • Sale priceThe final amount owed before applicable taxes or additional fees

The tool converts the percentage discount into a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiplies the original price by this decimal to determine the savings. The sale price is computed by subtracting this savings amount from the original price (or multiplying by one minus the discount rate) and formatting the results to two decimal places.

How to use the Percent Off Calculator

  1. 1Enter the regular, pre-sale price in the Price field.
  2. 2Enter the discount percentage in the Percent off field.
  3. 3Multiply the price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get total savings.
  4. 4Subtract the total savings from the original price to obtain the final sale price.

Reading your result

The 'Sale price' represents the net purchase price you will pay at checkout before any local sales tax is applied. The 'Savings' indicates the total cash discount subtracted from the regular tag price.

Limitations

This calculator computes a single flat percentage discount on a single price point. It does not account for state or local sales taxes, shipping fees, manufacturer rebates, or stacked discounts (such as an extra 20% off an already discounted clearance item).

Common questions

How do I calculate a stacked discount, like an extra 20% off a sale price?+

Calculate the first discount to find the intermediate sale price, then enter that new price as the starting price with the second percentage discount. Successive percentage discounts cannot simply be added together.

Does this calculation include sales tax?+

No. Sales tax varies by jurisdiction and is usually assessed on the discounted sale price rather than the original sticker price. Calculate the sale price first, then apply your local sales tax rate.

What happens if the discount is 100% or more?+

A 100% discount reduces the sale price to $0.00 and savings equals the full original price. Percentages above 100% would produce a negative sale price, which does not represent typical retail transactions.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
