About the Currency Calculator

This calculator converts monetary values between ten major world currencies using static benchmark exchange rates. It helps travelers, shoppers, and planners estimate cross-border costs without needing an active financial market feed. It displays both the total converted balance and the direct exchange rate between the selected pair.

Amount
The numerical value of money in the base currency to convert (e.g., 100).
From
The starting currency code selected from USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, CNY, INR, or MXN.
To
The target currency code selected from EUR, USD, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, CNY, INR, or MXN.

Formula and method

Converted Amount = Amount × (R_to / R_from)
Exchange Rate = R_to / R_from
  • AmountThe input sum of money in the origin currency
  • R_fromThe static USD-pegged benchmark rate of the origin currency
  • R_toThe static USD-pegged benchmark rate of the destination currency
  • Exchange RateThe relative conversion rate (1 unit of From currency in To currency units)

The calculator uses a fixed table of exchange rates normalized to 1 USD (such as USD = 1.0, EUR = 0.86, GBP = 0.75, and JPY = 148). The input amount is divided by the base currency's USD rate to find the USD equivalent, then multiplied by the destination currency's USD rate. Converted values are rounded to two decimal places, and exchange rates are displayed to four decimal places.

How to use the Currency Calculator

  1. 1Enter the numerical monetary amount you want to convert.
  2. 2Choose the origin currency from the 'From' dropdown list.
  3. 3Choose the target currency from the 'To' dropdown list.
  4. 4Read the converted total and the underlying exchange rate calculation.

Reading your result

The 'Converted' result represents the equivalent numerical balance in the selected destination currency. The 'Rate' line indicates how many units of the target currency equal exactly one unit of the origin currency. The 'Note' confirms that calculations reflect static reference figures rather than live market quotes.

Limitations

This tool relies on fixed reference rates and does not connect to live interbank foreign exchange data feeds. It also omits retail conversion markups, wire fees, credit card foreign transaction fees, and buy-sell bid-ask spreads charged by banks or exchange kiosks.

Common questions

Why does the exchange rate differ from what my bank offers?+

Commercial banks, credit card processors, and exchange booths add transaction fees and a retail spread onto base rates, meaning you receive fewer units of foreign currency than theoretical benchmark rates indicate.

Are these conversion rates updated in real time?+

No, this calculator uses built-in benchmark exchange rates for quick estimates and does not update continuously with live financial market fluctuations.

How is a cross-rate between two non-USD currencies calculated?+

Both currencies are priced against a common base (USD). The calculator divides the destination rate by the origin rate to establish the direct cross-currency ratio.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
