About the Early Versus Delayed Pension Calculator
The Early Versus Delayed Pension Calculator finds the age when a larger pension starting later catches up with the cumulative payments from a smaller pension starting earlier. It compares the benefits forgone during the waiting period with the extra monthly income received after the delayed start. This is a nominal comparison: it does not discount future payments or account for investment returns.
- Early monthly pension ($)
- The monthly pension payment in dollars if you start at the early start age, with a default of $1,800.
- Delayed monthly pension ($)
- The monthly pension payment in dollars if you wait until the delayed start age, with a default of $2,300.
- Early start age (years)
- Your age in years when the early pension begins, with a default of 60.
- Delayed start age (years)
- Your age in years when the delayed pension begins, with a default of 65.
Formula and method
F = E × 12 × (A_d − A_e); M = F ÷ (D − E); A_c = A_d + M ÷ 12. With the defaults: F = 1800 × 12 × (65 − 60) = $108,000.00; M = 108000 ÷ (2300 − 1800) = 216 months; A_c = 65 + 216 ÷ 12 = 83.
- EEarly monthly pension in dollars.
- DDelayed monthly pension in dollars.
- A_eEarly start age in years.
- A_dDelayed start age in years.
- FBenefits forgone in dollars while waiting for the delayed pension.
- MMonths after the delayed start needed for cumulative delayed payments to catch up.
- A_cCatch-up age in years.
First, convert the gap between start ages to months and multiply by the early monthly pension to find the early option's cumulative head start. Then divide that head start by the delayed pension's monthly advantage to find the catch-up time. Convert that time to years and add it to the delayed start age. For the intended comparison, the delayed start age must be later and the delayed monthly pension must exceed the early monthly pension.

Reading your result
Benefits forgone while waiting is the total paid by the early option before the delayed option begins: $108,000.00 with the defaults. Months after delayed start to catch up is the time needed for the larger pension's extra monthly payment to erase that head start: 216 months, measured from age 65 rather than age 60. Catch-up age is the age when cumulative payments are equal: 83. Before that age, the early option has paid more in total; after it, the delayed option has paid more, assuming both pensions continue unchanged.
Limitations
The calculation assumes constant monthly payments that continue for life, a 12-month year, and no interruption in eligibility or payments. It ignores discounting, inflation, cost-of-living adjustments, investment returns, taxes, fees, survivor benefits, and differences in pension guarantees. It does not estimate life expectancy or determine which option is best for you. Fractional results represent a mathematical break-even point; actual payment dates and whole-month schedules can shift when cumulative cash received first catches up. If there is a positive early-payment head start and the delayed monthly pension is no larger, there is no finite catch-up age.
Common questions
Why are benefits forgone $108,000.00 with the default inputs?+
Waiting from age 60 to age 65 means forgoing 60 monthly payments of $1,800. Multiplying $1,800 by 60 gives $108,000.00.
Why divide by the monthly pension difference rather than the full delayed pension?+
The early pension continues paying after age 65, so only the delayed option's extra $500 per month closes the gap. Dividing $108,000.00 by $500 gives 216 months, producing a catch-up age of 83.
What if my delayed pension is equal to or smaller than my early pension?+
If the early option has already built up a positive payment head start, an equal delayed payment never reduces that gap, and a smaller delayed payment widens it. Neither case has a finite catch-up age under this model.
Does a catch-up age of 83 mean I should start my pension early?+
No. It means only that the default options pay the same cumulative nominal amount at age 83. Your choice also depends on longevity, cash needs, taxes, inflation protection, survivor benefits, and the value of receiving money sooner.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
