About the Social Security Calculator

This calculator estimates how claiming Social Security before or after your full retirement age changes your retirement benefit. It compares your primary insurance amount against standard early-filing reduction rates and delayed retirement credits up to age 70.

Benefit at full retirement age
Your estimated primary insurance amount (PIA) in dollars per month, typically ranging from $500 to $4,500.
Full retirement age
Your statutory full retirement age (FRA) based on birth year, typically between 66 and 67.
Claiming age
The age at which you plan to start receiving retirement benefits, typically between 62 and 70.

Formula and method

d = (Claiming Age − FRA) × 12
If d < 0 (early claiming, m = −d):
f = 1 − [min(m, 36) × (5 / 900) + max(0, m − 36) × (5 / 1200)]
If d ≥ 0 (delayed claiming):
f = 1 + min(d, (70 − FRA) × 12) × (2 / 300)
Monthly Benefit = PIA × f
Adjustment = (f − 1) × 100%
Yearly Benefit = Monthly Benefit × 12
  • PIABenefit at full retirement age (Primary Insurance Amount)
  • FRAFull retirement age in years
  • dMonths difference between claiming age and full retirement age
  • mMonths claimed early before full retirement age (−d)
  • fAdjustment factor applied to the baseline benefit

The tool computes the month difference between the selected claiming age and full retirement age. For early claiming, it subtracts 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months and 5/12 of 1% for each additional month early; for delayed claiming, it adds 2/3 of 1% per month (8% per year) capped at age 70.

How to use the Social Security Calculator

  1. 1Calculate the net claiming difference in months relative to full retirement age.
  2. 2If claiming early, apply a reduction factor of 5/9% per month for up to 36 months, plus 5/12% for each additional month.
  3. 3If delaying past full retirement age, apply an increase of 2/3% per month up to age 70.
  4. 4Multiply the monthly full retirement benefit by the adjustment factor to obtain monthly and annual payouts.

Reading your result

An adjustment of 0% indicates claiming exactly at full retirement age. A negative adjustment percentage reflects a permanent reduction due to early filing, whereas a positive percentage reflects delayed retirement credits.

Limitations

This simplified model assumes whole-year ages and ignores cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), spousal benefits, and taxation of benefits. It also assumes delayed retirement credits cease entirely at age 70 and does not account for the earnings test if working while collecting early.

Common questions

What is the earliest age I can claim Social Security retirement benefits?+

You can begin claiming retirement benefits as early as age 62, but doing so locks in the maximum early-claiming reduction relative to your full retirement age.

Why does the benefit stop increasing after age 70?+

Delayed retirement credits cease accumulating once you reach age 70, meaning there is no financial advantage to postponing claiming beyond that point.

Is the benefit reduction permanent if I claim early?+

Yes. If you claim before your full retirement age, your baseline monthly benefit is permanently reduced by the computed percentage for the remainder of your life, aside from regular annual cost-of-living adjustments.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
