About the Megabits to Megabytes per Second

The Megabits to Megabytes per Second calculator converts internet speeds in megabits per second (Mbps) into megabytes per second (MB/s). It helps you compare a connection's advertised bit rate with the byte-based transfer rates often shown by download software. With the default input of 1 Mbps, the result is 0.125 MB/s.

Value in Mbps (Mbps)
Enter the internet or data-transfer speed in megabits per second (Mbps); the default value is 1.

Formula and method

R_MB = R_Mb / 8; equivalently, R_Mb = 8 × R_MB.
  • R_MBData-transfer rate in megabytes per second (MB/s), the converted output.
  • R_MbData-transfer rate in megabits per second (Mbps), the input.

Divide the entered Mbps value by 8 because one byte contains eight bits. Both units use the same decimal mega prefix, so no additional scaling is needed. For the default input, 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125 MB/s.

How to use the Megabits to Megabytes per Second

  1. 1Find the connection speed you want to convert and confirm that it is expressed in Mbps.
  2. 2Enter it in Value in Mbps (Mbps), or leave the default value of 1.
  3. 3Read the MB/s result, calculated by dividing the input by 8.
  4. 4Check the forward conversion row: with the default input, 1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s.
  5. 5Use the reverse reference row, 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps, to confirm the relationship between the units.

Reading your result

The result row, MB/s = 0.125, gives the converted transfer rate for the default input. The forward row, shown as '1 Mbps = = 0.125 MB/s', states the same equivalence; the repeated equals sign is only display formatting. The reverse row, shown as '1 MB/s = = 8 Mbps', is a unit reference rather than a second result for your input.

Limitations

This is a unit conversion, not a speed test or a guarantee of download performance. It assumes decimal units: a megabit is 1,000,000 bits and a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. Actual file-transfer rates can be lower because of protocol overhead, network congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, and server or storage limits. MB/s is not the same as MiB/s, which uses binary mebibytes. Use nonnegative speed values; negative rates do not represent ordinary download or upload speeds.

Common questions

Why does the calculator divide Mbps by 8?+

Mbps counts bits, while MB/s counts bytes. Since each byte contains eight bits, the same transfer rate has a byte-based value one-eighth as large: 1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s.

Does the capital B in MB/s matter?+

Yes. Lowercase b means bits, while uppercase B means bytes. Mbps means megabits per second, whereas MB/s means megabytes per second.

Will a 1 Mbps connection download files at exactly 0.125 MB/s?+

Not necessarily. 0.125 MB/s is the exact unit conversion of 1 Mbps, but usable file-download throughput may be lower because some capacity carries protocol data and because network or device conditions can limit performance.

Can I compare this result directly with a download rate in MiB/s?+

No. This calculator outputs decimal MB/s, not binary MiB/s. A megabyte contains 1,000,000 bytes, while a mebibyte contains 1,048,576 bytes, so the numerical rates differ.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
