About the Megabytes to Gigabytes
The Megabytes to Gigabytes calculator converts a data amount in megabytes (MB) into gigabytes (GB) using the decimal definition: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. With the default input of 1 MB, it returns 0.001 GB. This tool uses decimal units, not binary mebibytes (MiB) or gibibytes (GiB).
- Value in megabytes (megabytes)
- The data amount to convert, expressed in megabytes (MB), with a default value of 1.
Formula and method
G = M / 1000
- GThe converted data amount in gigabytes (GB).
- MThe input data amount in megabytes (MB).
Divide the megabyte input by 1,000 to obtain the equivalent amount in gigabytes. For the default input, G = 1 / 1000 = 0.001 GB. The conversion changes the unit, not the amount of data.

Inputs
- Value in megabytes1 megabytes
Results
- gigabytes0.001
- 1 megabytes =0.001 gigabytes
- 1 gigabytes =1,000 megabytes
How to use the Megabytes to Gigabytes
- 1Locate the Value in megabytes (megabytes) input.
- 2Enter the amount in MB, or leave the default value of 1.
- 3Read the gigabytes result, calculated by dividing the input by 1,000.
- 4Check the forward conversion row: with the default input, 1 megabyte equals 0.001 gigabytes.
- 5Use the reverse reference row, 1 gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes, to confirm the decimal conversion factor.
Reading your result
The gigabytes output is the converted amount: 0.001 for the default input. The row shown as “1 megabytes = = 0.001 gigabytes” expresses the same conversion as an equality; the duplicated equals sign is only a display artifact. The row “1 gigabytes = = 1,000 megabytes” gives the reverse unit relationship, not a second result for the input.
Limitations
This calculator assumes decimal units: one megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and one gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. It does not convert MiB to GiB, which use binary definitions. Check the source unit before entering a value, since some software uses MB or GB labels for binary quantities. The conversion does not account for formatting overhead, compression, or usable storage capacity; any display rounding may also limit the precision shown.
Common questions
Why does 1 MB become 0.001 GB?+
A decimal gigabyte contains 1,000 megabytes, so dividing the default input of 1 MB by 1,000 gives 0.001 GB.
Should I divide megabytes by 1,000 or 1,024?+
For this calculator’s decimal MB-to-GB conversion, divide by 1,000. Dividing by 1,024 applies when converting mebibytes (MiB) to gibibytes (GiB), not decimal megabytes to gigabytes.
Can I enter megabits instead of megabytes?+
Not directly. A byte contains eight bits, so first divide a value in decimal megabits (Mb) by eight to obtain megabytes (MB), then enter that amount.
Why is the reverse row always 1 GB = 1,000 MB?+
That row states the fixed decimal unit relationship. It is a reference for the conversion factor, whereas the gigabytes result depends on your megabyte input.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
