Quotient and remainder.
About the Long Division Calculator
This calculator performs integer and decimal division between two numbers. It computes the whole-number quotient, the remainder, and the full decimal division result rounded up to eight decimal places. Students, educators, and anyone verifying manual long division steps can use it to check their work.
- Dividend
- The number being divided (numerator), typically any real number or integer.
- Divisor
- The number to divide by (denominator); must be a non-zero real number or integer.
Formula and method
Quotient = trunc(a / b) Remainder = a mod b Decimal = round(a / b, 8)
- aDividend
- bDivisor
- truncTruncation function (removes fractional digits, rounding toward zero)
- modModulo operator, finding the remainder after division
The calculator truncates the result of the dividend divided by the divisor to produce an integer quotient. The remainder is computed using standard modulo arithmetic (a % b), and the continuous decimal result is evaluated and rounded to eight decimal places.

Inputs
- Dividend1234
- Divisor7
Results
- Quotient176
- Remainder2

How to use the Long Division Calculator
- 1Enter the number you want to divide into the Dividend field.
- 2Enter the number you are dividing by into the Divisor field.
- 3The integer quotient is computed by dividing the dividend by the divisor and truncating toward zero.
- 4The remaining balance is calculated via modulo arithmetic, and the exact decimal fraction is generated rounded to 8 decimal places.
Reading your result
The 'Quotient' displays how many full times the divisor fits into the dividend without fractions. The 'Remainder' indicates what portion remains unprocessed as a whole integer. The 'Decimal' output shows the continuous division outcome expressed in decimal form.
Limitations
This calculator does not output step-by-step subtraction arrays or intermediate long division working bars. A divisor of zero results in division by zero (producing Infinity or NaN). Modulo results for negative numbers follow standard JavaScript remainder semantics rather than strict Euclidean division.
Common questions
Can long division be done with a divisor of zero?+
Division by zero is mathematically undefined. The calculator will output Infinity or NaN (Not a Number).
How does remainder relate to the decimal output?+
The fractional portion of the decimal result is equal to the remainder divided by the divisor (Remainder / Divisor).
How does the calculator handle negative numbers?+
Quotients are truncated toward zero using Math.trunc, and remainders follow standard JavaScript modulo rules, meaning the remainder takes the sign of the dividend.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
