About the Layaway Total Cost Calculator
The Layaway Total Cost Calculator adds a service fee to an item's price and divides the balance after your deposit across the remaining payments. Use it to estimate the full cost of your layaway purchase and the amount of each remaining installment.
- Item price ($)
- The purchase price of the item in dollars, before the separately entered service fee; the default is $800.
- Deposit ($)
- The upfront payment in dollars credited toward the layaway total; the default is $100.
- Service fee ($)
- The total fixed layaway service charge in dollars added to the item price; the default is $30.
- Remaining installments (payments)
- The number of payments left after the deposit, entered as a positive whole number; the default is 7.
Formula and method
T = P + F; B = T - D; I = B / N = (P + F - D) / N
- PItem price in dollars.
- DDeposit in dollars credited toward the total.
- FTotal fixed service fee in dollars.
- NNumber of remaining installments.
- TTotal layaway cost in dollars, including the deposit and service fee.
- BRemaining balance in dollars after subtracting the deposit.
- IAmount of each remaining installment in dollars, displayed to two decimal places.
Add the item price and service fee to find the total cost, subtract the deposit to find the remaining balance, and divide that balance by the number of remaining installments. With the default inputs, T = $800 + $30 = $830.00, B = $830 - $100 = $730.00, and I = $730 / 7 = $104.29 when rounded to the nearest cent.

Reading your result
The Total cost row shows the item price plus the service fee: $830.00 with the default inputs. It includes the deposit, so it is not the amount still owed. The Each remaining installment row shows the remaining $730.00 balance divided among 7 payments: $104.29 per payment when rounded. The retailer may adjust the final payment slightly to account for rounding.
Limitations
This estimate assumes a single fixed service fee, a deposit fully credited toward the total, and equal remaining installments before rounding. It does not automatically add sales tax, interest, late fees, cancellation charges, or recurring fees. It also does not determine payment dates, refund rights, or when the item can be collected. Use nonnegative dollar amounts, a deposit no greater than the item price plus service fee, and a positive whole number of remaining installments. The retailer's agreement controls actual payment amounts and fee treatment.
Common questions
Does the $830.00 total include my $100 deposit?+
Yes. The $830.00 total includes the deposit rather than adding it again. After the $100 deposit, the remaining balance is $730.00.
Is the $30 service fee charged on every installment?+
No. This calculator adds the $30 service fee once to the $800 item price. If your retailer charges recurring fees, this single-fee calculation will not automatically account for them.
Why might my final layaway payment differ from $104.29?+
Dividing $730.00 by 7 produces an amount with fractions of a cent. Seven payments of $104.29 would total $730.03, so a retailer could collect six payments of $104.29 and a final payment of $104.26 to settle the balance exactly.
Does increasing the deposit reduce the total layaway cost?+
Not under this formula. With the item price and service fee unchanged, the total remains $830.00. A larger deposit only reduces the balance spread across the remaining installments.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
