About the Irrigation Runtime Calculator
The Irrigation Runtime Calculator estimates how long an irrigation zone must run to apply a desired water depth, using its precipitation rate. With a desired depth of 12 mm and a precipitation rate of 8 mm/h, the calculated runtime is 90 minutes. Use it to translate a watering-depth target into a timer setting for a zone with a known application rate.
- Desired water depth (mm)
- The depth of irrigation water you want to apply across the watered area, measured in millimeters (mm).
- Precipitation rate (mm/h)
- The average depth of water your irrigation system applies per hour across the watered area, measured in millimeters per hour (mm/h).
Formula and method
t = (D / P) × 60; with the default inputs, t = (12 / 8) × 60 = 90 minutes.
- tRequired irrigation runtime in minutes.
- DDesired water depth in millimeters.
- PIrrigation precipitation rate in millimeters per hour.
Divide the desired water depth by the precipitation rate to obtain runtime in hours, then multiply by 60 to convert to minutes. For the default inputs, 12 mm divided by 8 mm/h gives 1.5 hours, which equals 90 minutes. The precipitation rate must be greater than zero, and the desired depth must not be negative.

How to use the Irrigation Runtime Calculator
- 1Determine the irrigation depth you intend to apply and enter it in Desired water depth (mm); the default is 12 mm.
- 2Enter the precipitation rate for the irrigation zone in Precipitation rate (mm/h); the default is 8 mm/h.
- 3Check that the rate describes your irrigation system's application rate, not a rainfall forecast, and that both inputs use the stated units.
- 4Read the calculated runtime; the default inputs produce 90 minutes.
- 5Use the runtime as the total watering duration for that zone, splitting it into shorter cycles if needed to avoid runoff.
Reading your result
The result row shows the estimated irrigation runtime in minutes. A result of 90 minutes means the zone must operate for a total of 90 minutes to apply an average depth of 12 mm at a constant precipitation rate of 8 mm/h. This is watering time only; any pauses between cycles are additional elapsed time.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a constant average precipitation rate and does not adjust for uneven coverage, wind drift, evaporation, runoff, or deep drainage. Applied depth is not necessarily the amount retained in the root zone. The tool does not determine plant water requirements or account automatically for rainfall, existing soil moisture, soil infiltration capacity, or watering restrictions. Use a rate specific to the zone being scheduled; drip-system flow ratings require conversion to a depth-based rate over a defined area before use.
Common questions
How can I measure my sprinkler zone's precipitation rate?+
Place several straight-sided catch containers across the zone, run the sprinklers for a measured duration, and average the collected water depths in millimeters. Divide that average by the test duration in hours to obtain mm/h.
Does the 90-minute result mean I should water continuously?+
Not necessarily. If water begins to puddle or run off, divide the 90 minutes into shorter watering cycles with soak periods between them. The calculator gives total operating time, not the length or spacing of individual cycles.
Should I reduce the desired depth after rain?+
If rainfall has already supplied part of your watering target, enter only the remaining irrigation depth needed. Consider effective rainfall retained in the soil rather than assuming all measured rainfall is available to plants.
Can I use one runtime for every irrigation zone?+
Only if the zones have the same desired depth and precipitation rate. Zones with different sprinkler types, spacing, pressure, or watering needs should be calculated separately.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
