About the IRA Calculator
This calculator projects the future growth of a Traditional Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) based on current savings, regular annual contributions, and expected investment returns. It also estimates the net balance available after paying income taxes on withdrawals during retirement.
- Current balance
- The starting balance already held in the Traditional IRA, in dollars (typically $0 to $1,000,000+).
- Annual contribution
- The amount deposited into the IRA each year, in dollars (subject to annual IRS statutory contribution limits).
- Return
- The estimated annual compound investment return, as a percentage (typically 4% to 10%).
- Years
- The investment time horizon until retirement withdrawals begin, in whole years (typically 1 to 50).
- Tax rate in retirement
- The expected effective income tax rate applied to withdrawals in retirement, as a percentage (typically 0% to 37%).
Formula and method
Balance = P × (1 + r)^t + C × (((1 + r)^t - 1) / r) After-tax Balance = Balance × (1 - tax / 100)
- BalancePre-tax total value of the Traditional IRA at the end of the investment period
- PCurrent starting balance ($)
- rAnnual investment return expressed as a decimal (Return / 100)
- tNumber of investment years
- CAnnual contribution amount ($), compounded annually as an ordinary annuity
- taxEstimated tax rate upon withdrawal in retirement (%)
The pre-tax balance is calculated using standard future value compounding, growing the initial balance and compounding annual contributions at the end of each year. The after-tax balance is then calculated by multiplying the final accumulated balance by one minus the retirement tax rate.

- Current balance10000 $
- Annual contribution7500 $

- Tax rate in retirement22 %

How to use the IRA Calculator
- 1Compound the initial balance over the specified number of years at the annual return rate.
- 2Calculate the accumulated future value of the annual contributions using the ordinary annuity formula.
- 3Add the compounded balance and annuity value together to determine the pre-tax IRA balance.
- 4Multiply the pre-tax balance by (1 - Tax rate / 100) to find the estimated take-home value.
Reading your result
The 'Balance' shows the total nominal value of your pre-tax retirement account before distributions. The 'After tax' amount illustrates your actual purchasing power, assuming the entire balance is taxed at your specified effective retirement tax rate.
Limitations
This model applies a single flat tax rate across the entire final balance, without modeling progressive tax brackets, state income taxes, or required minimum distributions (RMDs). It also assumes a constant annual investment return and uniform end-of-year contributions without adjusting for inflation.
Common questions
Why are Traditional IRA withdrawals taxed?+
Traditional IRAs allow pre-tax contributions or tax deductions in the year you contribute. Because earnings and contributions grow tax-deferred, the IRS treats withdrawals in retirement as ordinary income.
What is the annual contribution limit for an IRA?+
The IRS sets an annual maximum contribution limit across all Traditional and Roth IRAs combined, with an additional catch-up contribution permitted for individuals aged 50 and older.
Should I use my marginal or effective tax rate for retirement?+
An estimated effective tax rate provides a closer estimate of total taxes paid across multiple tax brackets, whereas your marginal bracket only reflects the rate on your last dollar of income.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
