About the Insurance Deductible Break-Even Calculator
The Insurance Deductible Break-Even Calculator compares the extra claim exposure from a higher deductible with the annual premium savings it offers. It estimates how many claim-free years of savings would offset that added exposure, helping you weigh lower ongoing premiums against a larger potential out-of-pocket payment.
- Current deductible ($)
- Your existing policy's deductible in dollars, entered as $500 by default.
- Proposed deductible ($)
- The deductible in dollars for the policy option you are considering, entered as $1,500 by default.
- Current annual premium ($)
- The yearly cost of your existing insurance policy in dollars, entered as $1,800 by default.
- Proposed annual premium ($)
- The yearly cost of the proposed insurance option in dollars, entered as $1,500 by default.
Formula and method
E = D_p − D_c; S = P_c − P_p; Y = E / S. With the default inputs: E = $1,500 − $500 = $1,000.00; S = $1,800 − $1,500 = $300.00 per year; Y = $1,000.00 / $300.00 = 3.3333 years. A positive break-even period requires E > 0 and S > 0.
- D_cCurrent deductible, in dollars.
- D_pProposed deductible, in dollars.
- P_cCurrent annual premium, in dollars per year.
- P_pProposed annual premium, in dollars per year.
- EAdditional deductible exposure, in dollars.
- SAnnual premium savings, in dollars per year.
- YClaim-free years of premium savings needed to offset the additional deductible exposure.
Subtract the current deductible from the proposed deductible to find added exposure. Subtract the proposed annual premium from the current annual premium to find yearly savings. Divide added exposure by positive annual savings to estimate the claim-free break-even period, displaying dollar results to two decimal places and years to four decimal places.

How to use the Insurance Deductible Break-Even Calculator
- 1Enter your current deductible in dollars; the default is $500.
- 2Enter the proposed deductible in dollars; the default is $1,500.
- 3Enter both annual premiums using comparable policy quotes; the defaults are $1,800 current and $1,500 proposed.
- 4Review the additional deductible exposure, annual premium savings, and claim-free years needed to offset the exposure.
- 5Consider whether you can afford the proposed deductible immediately, rather than relying on future savings to fund a claim.
Reading your result
Additional deductible exposure of $1,000.00 means the proposed deductible is that much higher than the current deductible; it is not an automatic cost or the total proposed deductible. Annual premium savings of $300.00 means the proposed policy costs that much less each year. Claim-free years to offset added exposure of 3.3333 means that, at the stated savings rate, accumulated premium savings would equal the additional exposure after approximately three and one-third claim-free years. This is a simple savings benchmark, not a prediction of when a claim will occur.
Limitations
The comparison assumes equivalent coverage, limits, exclusions, and deductible rules, with premiums and deductibles remaining constant. It ignores claim probability, claim size, investment returns, inflation, taxes, and fees. The deductible difference represents the added exposure when a covered loss is large enough for both deductibles to apply fully; smaller losses may create less additional expense. Multiple claims may trigger multiple deductibles, depending on the policy. The calculation does not model annual aggregate deductibles or other out-of-pocket costs. Zero or negative premium savings do not provide a positive savings-funded break-even period for a higher deductible.
Common questions
Does 3.3333 claim-free years mean the higher deductible is the better choice?+
No. With the default inputs, it means $300.00 in annual savings would take 3.3333 years to offset $1,000.00 of added deductible exposure. Whether the change is worthwhile also depends on your ability to pay the $1,500 proposed deductible and your likelihood of making claims.
What if I have a claim before reaching the break-even period?+
You may need to pay the higher deductible before savings have covered the difference. With the defaults, a covered loss large enough for both deductibles to apply fully could cost you $1,000.00 more out of pocket under the proposed option. The actual difference depends on the loss and policy terms.
What if the proposed deductible is higher but the annual premium is not lower?+
There is no premium-savings break-even for the added exposure. Equal premiums produce zero savings and an undefined division; a higher proposed premium produces negative savings, so a negative ratio should not be interpreted as a meaningful break-even time.
Can I compare quotes with different coverage using this calculator?+
You can enter the amounts, but the result only compares deductibles and premiums. If coverage limits, exclusions, or benefits differ, the premium difference may not reflect the deductible change alone; compare equivalent coverage for a clearer assessment.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
