About the Household Utility Split Calculator
The Household Utility Split Calculator divides a utility bill between two household members in proportion to their occupancy person-days. It assigns a larger share to the person who was present longer during the billing period. With a $240 bill and occupancy totals of 30 and 20 person-days, the shares are $144.00 and $96.00.
- Total utility bill ($)
- The total utility cost to divide for the billing period, measured in dollars, with a default of $240.
- First person's occupancy (person-days)
- The first person's total occupancy during the billing period, measured in person-days, with a default of 30.
- Second person's occupancy (person-days)
- The second person's total occupancy during the billing period, measured in person-days, with a default of 20.
Formula and method
D = d₁ + d₂; S₁ = B × d₁ / D; S₂ = B × d₂ / D, where D > 0.
- BTotal utility bill in dollars.
- d₁First person's occupancy in person-days.
- d₂Second person's occupancy in person-days.
- DCombined occupancy in person-days.
- S₁First person's allocated share in dollars.
- S₂Second person's allocated share in dollars.
Add the two occupancy totals, then divide each person's occupancy by that combined total to find their allocation percentage. Multiply the bill by each percentage and display the shares to two decimal places. For the default inputs, D = 30 + 20 = 50 person-days. The first person owes $240 × 30 / 50 = $144.00, and the second person owes $240 × 20 / 50 = $96.00.

Inputs
- Total utility bill240 $

- First person's share$144.00
- Second person's share$96.00
How to use the Household Utility Split Calculator
- 1Enter the total utility bill in dollars; the default is $240.
- 2Enter the first person's occupancy for that bill's billing period; the default is 30 person-days.
- 3Enter the second person's occupancy for the same billing period; the default is 20 person-days.
- 4Check that occupancy values are nonnegative and that their combined total is greater than zero, then calculate the split.
- 5Read both dollar shares: with the default inputs, the first person pays $144.00 and the second person pays $96.00.
Reading your result
The first person's share row shows the amount allocated to the person whose occupancy was entered in the first occupancy field: $144.00, or 60% of the default bill. The second person's share row shows the amount allocated to the other household member: $96.00, or 40%. These default shares add to the full $240 bill.
Limitations
This split assumes equal utility use per person-day and allocates the entire bill by occupancy, including any fixed service charges. It does not measure actual consumption or account for differences in appliance use, room size, or household agreements. Both occupancy totals must cover the same billing period; negative occupancy values are invalid, and two zero occupancy totals cannot produce a proportional split. For other inputs, rounding each share to cents can leave a one-cent difference from the bill total that must be reconciled.
Common questions
How do I count occupancy when both household members are home on the same day?+
Count that day once for each person. Occupancy totals represent person-days, not unique calendar days, so overlapping days belong in both people's totals.
Why does the first person pay $144.00 rather than half of the $240 bill?+
The first person accounts for 30 of the combined 50 person-days, or 60%, so their share is $144.00. The second person accounts for 20 person-days, or 40%, and pays $96.00.
What happens if one household member has no occupancy during the billing period?+
If one person's occupancy is zero and the other's is positive, the zero-occupancy person receives a zero share and the other receives the full bill. If both are zero, the formula is undefined.
Can we split fixed utility charges equally and only allocate usage by occupancy?+
This calculator applies occupancy proportions to the entire amount entered. To use a different rule for fixed charges, exclude those charges from the entered bill, calculate the occupancy-based portion, and add each person's agreed fixed-charge share separately.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
