About the Hours Between Dates

The Hours Between Dates calculator converts the interval between a start date and an end date into total hours, minutes, seconds, and days. Using the default dates, 2026-10-23 and 2026-10-30, it returns 168 hours, 10,080 minutes, 604,800 seconds, and 7 days. These totals describe the same interval in different units, using 24-hour days.

Start date
The beginning calendar date of the interval, entered in YYYY-MM-DD format and defaulting to 2026-10-23.
End date
The ending calendar date of the interval, entered in YYYY-MM-DD format and defaulting to 2026-10-30.

Formula and method

D = ordinal(E) − ordinal(S); H = D × 24; M = H × 60; T = M × 60. For S = 2026-10-23 and E = 2026-10-30: D = 7; H = 7 × 24 = 168; M = 168 × 60 = 10,080; T = 10,080 × 60 = 604,800.
  • SStart date.
  • EEnd date.
  • ordinal(x)The whole-day position of calendar date x relative to a common reference date.
  • DDate difference in days.
  • HTotal hours in the interval.
  • MTotal minutes in the interval.
  • TTotal seconds in the interval.

Find the calendar-day difference by subtracting the start date from the end date. Count the interval between the dates rather than counting both endpoint dates inclusively. Convert the day difference into hours using 24 hours per day, then into minutes and seconds using 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute.

How to use the Hours Between Dates

  1. 1Enter the Start date; leave 2026-10-23 selected to reproduce the default example.
  2. 2Enter the End date; leave 2026-10-30 selected for the default example.
  3. 3Check that the dates represent the intended interval, with the end date on or after the start date for a nonnegative duration.
  4. 4Run the calculation to obtain the interval in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
  5. 5Read the default results as Hours = 168, Minutes = 10,080, Seconds = 604,800, and Days = 7.

Reading your result

Hours reports the entire interval in hours: 168 for the default dates. Minutes reports the entire interval in minutes: 10,080, not minutes left over after counting hours. Seconds likewise reports the full interval in seconds: 604,800. Days reports the calendar-date difference: 7. The rows are equivalent representations of one duration and should not be added together.

Limitations

This date-only calculation assumes each day is exactly 24 hours and does not accept times of day or time zones. It is therefore a calendar-interval conversion, not a measurement of precise elapsed time across daylight saving changes or leap seconds. Weekends and holidays are included. The formula produces a negative difference when the end date precedes the start date, but the calculator interface may reject or otherwise handle reversed dates.

Common questions

Why do 2026-10-23 through 2026-10-30 give 7 days rather than an inclusive date count?+

The calculator measures the interval from the beginning of the start date to the beginning of the end date. Those dates are 7 days apart; it does not add an extra day to include the entire end date.

Are 10,080 minutes and 604,800 seconds additional to the 168 hours?+

No. Each row expresses the same full interval in a different unit: 168 hours equals 10,080 minutes and equals 604,800 seconds.

Does Hours Between Dates adjust the hour total for daylight saving time?+

The calculation shown uses a fixed 24 hours per calendar day. Without a time zone and times of day, it cannot determine a daylight-saving-adjusted elapsed duration.

Does the total exclude weekends or holidays?+

No. Every calendar day between the dates contributes to the total, so the default 7-day interval converts to 168 hours regardless of which dates are weekends or holidays.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
