About the Holiday Fund Planner
The Holiday Fund Planner calculates how much to save each week for gifts and holiday travel after accounting for money already set aside. It combines your gift and travel budgets, subtracts your existing holiday savings, and spreads the remaining amount across the weeks you have left.
- Gift budget ($)
- Your planned total spending on holiday gifts in dollars, with a default of $1,200.
- Travel budget ($)
- Your planned total spending on holiday travel in dollars, with a default of $800.
- Already saved ($)
- The money already set aside for these holiday expenses in dollars, with a default of $400.
- Weeks remaining (weeks)
- The number of weeks available to save before you need the holiday funds, with a default of 20 weeks.
Formula and method
B = G + T; W = (B − S) / N
- BTotal holiday budget in dollars.
- GGift budget in dollars.
- TTravel budget in dollars.
- SMoney already saved for the holiday budget in dollars.
- NWeeks remaining to save; must be greater than zero.
- WWeekly savings needed in dollars per week.
Add the gift and travel budgets to find the total holiday budget. Subtract money already saved, then divide the remaining funding gap by the weeks remaining. With the default inputs, $1,200 + $800 = $2,000.00, and ($2,000 − $400) / 20 = $80.00 per week. Dollar outputs are displayed to two decimal places.

Reading your result
Total holiday budget shows the combined gift and travel spending target: $2,000.00 with the default inputs. It is the full planned cost, not the amount still to save. Weekly savings needed shows the amount to set aside each week after crediting existing savings: $80.00 for 20 weeks with $400 already saved. If existing savings equal the budget, no additional saving is needed; if they exceed it, a negative formula result represents a surplus rather than a need to withdraw money.
Limitations
This is a simple savings schedule, not a forecast of affordability or future prices. It assumes equal weekly contributions, unchanged gift and travel costs, and that existing savings remain available for the holiday budget. It excludes interest, investment returns, fees, and expenses not included in the two budgets. Use nonnegative dollar inputs and a positive number of weeks. If gifts, flights, or accommodation must be paid for early, use the earlier funding deadline or plan those payments separately. Rounding to cents can leave a small final adjustment.
Common questions
Does the $2,000.00 total holiday budget include the $400 already saved?+
The total is the planned spending amount: $1,200 for gifts plus $800 for travel. The $400 already saved funds part of that total, leaving $1,600 to save.
Why is the default weekly holiday savings target $80.00?+
The planner subtracts the $400 already saved from the $2,000 holiday budget and divides the remaining $1,600 by 20 weeks.
Which deadline should I use if holiday travel must be booked before I buy gifts?+
Use the number of weeks until the earlier payment deadline if you want the full holiday fund ready by then. Otherwise, plan travel and gift payment schedules separately because this calculator uses one deadline for both.
Are holiday meals, decorations, and other seasonal costs included?+
There are no separate inputs for those costs. They are covered only if you deliberately include them in one of the entered budgets; otherwise, reserve money for them separately.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
