About the Golden Ratio Calculator
The Golden Ratio Calculator splits a total length into a long segment and a short segment in the golden ratio. It finds the division where the total length divided by the long segment equals the long segment divided by the short segment, approximately 1.6180339887.
- Total length
- The complete length to divide, defaulting to 10, expressed in any consistent length unit such as centimeters, meters, or inches.
Formula and method
φ = (1 + √5) / 2; a = L / φ; b = L − a = L / φ²; therefore L / a = a / b = φ.
- φThe golden ratio, displayed as 1.6180339887; it has no units.
- LThe total length entered by the user.
- aThe long segment, in the same units as L.
- bThe short segment, in the same units as L.
Compute the golden ratio from (1 + √5) / 2, retaining precision during calculation. Divide the total length by this ratio to obtain the long segment, then subtract the long segment from the total to obtain the short segment. For the default total length of 10, the displayed results are Golden ratio = 1.6180339887, Long segment = 6.1803398875, and Short segment = 3.8196601125.

- Long segment6.1803398875
- Short segment3.8196601125
How to use the Golden Ratio Calculator
- 1Choose the length unit you will use for both the input and the resulting segments.
- 2Enter a positive Total length, or leave the default value of 10.
- 3Read the Golden ratio output, which is 1.6180339887 regardless of the positive length entered.
- 4Read the Long segment and Short segment outputs; for the default input, they are 6.1803398875 and 3.8196601125.
- 5Use the long segment as the distance from one end to the division point, leaving the short segment on the other side.
Reading your result
Golden ratio is the dimensionless proportion shared by total length ÷ long segment and long segment ÷ short segment. Long segment is the larger part of the entered length, and Short segment is the remaining smaller part. With Total length = 10, the two displayed segment lengths, 6.1803398875 and 3.8196601125, sum to 10 and retain the input's units.
Limitations
A meaningful geometric split requires a positive total length: zero makes the segment ratios undefined, and negative values do not represent physical lengths. The golden ratio is irrational, so displayed decimals are approximations; dividing rounded segment values may not reproduce the displayed ratio exactly. The calculator assumes a continuous length and does not account for cutting loss, measurement uncertainty, or restrictions to whole-number lengths.
Common questions
Why is the long segment calculated by dividing the total length by the golden ratio?+
A golden-ratio split requires L / a = φ, so rearranging gives a = L / φ. The remaining segment b = L − a then satisfies a / b = φ as well.
Where should I mark the division for the default total length of 10?+
Mark 6.1803398875 units from one end, leaving 3.8196601125 units to the other end. Measuring the short segment from the opposite end locates the same division point.
Does changing the total length change the golden ratio output?+
No. The golden ratio remains 1.6180339887 as displayed; only the segment lengths change, scaling in direct proportion to the total length.
Should I use 1.6180339887 as an exact value when checking the segment lengths?+
No. That is a rounded display of φ. Use (1 + √5) / 2 with sufficient precision for the calculation, then round the final segment lengths to match the displayed results.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
