About the Flooring Box Calculator
The Flooring Box Calculator estimates how many whole boxes of flooring to buy from your floor area, the coverage per box, and a waste allowance. It adds the specified waste percentage to the area before rounding the required box count up to a whole number.
- Floor area (m²)
- The area you plan to cover with flooring, measured in square metres, with a default of 35 m².
- Box coverage (m²)
- The area covered by one full box of your chosen flooring, measured in square metres per box, with a default of 2.2 m².
- Waste (%)
- The extra flooring allowance for cuts, offcuts, and damaged pieces, expressed as a percentage of the floor area, with a default of 10%.
Formula and method
B = ⌈A × (1 + W / 100) / C⌉; with the default inputs, B = ⌈35 × (1 + 10 / 100) / 2.2⌉ = ⌈38.5 / 2.2⌉ = ⌈17.5⌉ = 18 boxes.
- BThe number of whole flooring boxes to buy.
- AThe floor area in square metres.
- WThe waste percentage entered as a number, such as 10 for 10%.
- CThe coverage of one box in square metres.
- ⌈ ⌉The ceiling operation, which rounds up to the next whole number unless the value is already a whole number.
Multiply the floor area by the waste percentage divided by 100 to find the extra allowance, then add it to the floor area. Divide this adjusted area by the coverage per box and round up to a whole box. For the defaults, the allowance is 3.5 m², the adjusted area is 38.5 m², and the unrounded requirement is 17.5 boxes, giving 18 boxes.

How to use the Flooring Box Calculator
- 1Measure the area that will receive flooring and enter it in Floor area (m²); the default is 35.
- 2Check the flooring packaging for its coverage per box and enter it in Box coverage (m²); the default is 2.2.
- 3Enter a waste percentage suited to the layout and installation guidance; the default is 10.
- 4Calculate the requirement and read the whole-box result: the default inputs produce 18 boxes.
- 5Confirm the box coverage and waste allowance with your supplier or installer before ordering.
Reading your result
The result row shows the estimated number of complete flooring boxes to purchase, including the entered waste allowance and whole-box rounding. With the default inputs, 18 boxes provide 39.6 m² of nominal coverage, exceeding the waste-adjusted requirement of 38.5 m² by 1.1 m². This rounding surplus is separate from the 3.5 m² waste allowance already included.
Limitations
The estimate assumes all boxes have the same stated coverage and are purchased as complete boxes. Floor area and box coverage must be positive, and waste must be nonnegative. The calculator does not plan individual plank or tile cuts, account for room geometry or pattern matching directly, or guarantee that the selected waste allowance is sufficient. It also excludes costs, underlay, trim, adhesives, and other installation materials.
Common questions
Why do the default inputs require 18 boxes rather than 17?+
The 35 m² floor area becomes 38.5 m² after adding 10% waste. Dividing by 2.2 m² per box gives 17.5 boxes, so the calculator rounds up to 18 to avoid ordering less than the adjusted requirement.
Is the default 10% waste allowance enough for every flooring layout?+
No. Diagonal layouts, patterned installations, and rooms with many corners can create more offcuts. Use the flooring manufacturer's or installer's recommended allowance for your layout rather than treating 10% as a guarantee.
Should I enter coverage per plank or coverage per box?+
Enter the total square-metre coverage of a complete box, as stated on the product packaging or listing. Using coverage per plank would make the result a plank count rather than the intended box count.
Can I combine several rooms into one calculation?+
Yes, if they use the same flooring with the same box coverage. Add their floor areas and choose a waste allowance suitable for the combined layout. Calculate different flooring products separately.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
