About the Drywall Sheet Calculator
The Drywall Sheet Calculator estimates how many whole drywall sheets to buy from a net wall area, the coverage of one sheet, and a waste allowance. It adds the waste percentage to the net area, divides by the sheet area, and rounds up to a whole sheet. With 80 m² of net area, 2.88 m² per sheet, and 10% waste, the estimate is 31 sheets.
- Net area (m²)
- The wall surface area to cover after subtracting openings you do not intend to board, measured in square metres; the default is 80 m².
- Sheet area (m²)
- The surface area covered by one drywall sheet, measured in square metres; the default is 2.88 m².
- Waste (%)
- The extra material allowance for cuts, unusable offcuts, and damage, expressed as a percentage of net area; the default is 10%.
Formula and method
N = ceil([A × (1 + W / 100)] / S). With the default inputs: N = ceil([80 × (1 + 10 / 100)] / 2.88) = ceil(88 / 2.88) = ceil(30.555…) = 31 sheets.
- NEstimated number of whole drywall sheets to buy.
- ANet wall area to cover, in m².
- SArea of one drywall sheet, in m².
- WWaste allowance entered as a percentage.
- ceilThe ceiling operation, which rounds a value up to the next whole number unless it is already a whole number.
Multiply the net wall area by one plus the waste percentage divided by 100. Divide this adjusted area by the area of one sheet, then round up only the final sheet count. For the default inputs, the waste allowance adds 8 m² to 80 m², giving 88 m²; dividing by 2.88 m² gives 30.555… sheets, which rounds up to 31.

How to use the Drywall Sheet Calculator
- 1Measure the wall surfaces to be boarded and subtract openings that will not receive drywall to find the net area in m².
- 2Enter the net area; the default worked example uses 80 m².
- 3Enter the area of the sheet size you plan to buy, using length × width in metres; the default is 2.88 m².
- 4Enter a waste percentage to allow for cutting and damage; the default worked example uses 10%.
- 5Read the whole-sheet estimate: the default inputs give 31 sheets, which you should check against your planned sheet layout before ordering.
Reading your result
The Result row shows the estimated number of whole sheets, including the entered waste allowance and final upward rounding. A result of 31 sheets means the default calculation calls for purchasing 31 sheets with an area of 2.88 m² each. This is a material quantity estimate, not a sheet-cutting plan or a guarantee that every wall layout can be covered with that quantity.
Limitations
The calculation assumes all sheets have the same area and that the entered net area represents every surface layer to be covered. It does not optimize sheet placement or account directly for wall height, framing locations, joint staggering, sheet orientation, opening cuts, or whether offcuts can be reused. A percentage allowance cannot guarantee enough material for a complex layout. Net area and waste should be nonnegative, and sheet area must be greater than zero. The estimate does not specify board thickness, moisture or fire resistance, fasteners, joint compound, tape, labor, or cost.
Common questions
Should I subtract doors and windows from the net wall area?+
Subtract openings that will not be boarded, but include any reveals or returns that will receive drywall. Cutting around openings can still consume substantial sheet material, so check the layout and retain a suitable waste allowance.
Why do the default inputs produce 31 sheets rather than 30?+
Adding 10% waste to 80 m² gives 88 m². Dividing by 2.88 m² per sheet gives 30.555… sheets, so the calculator rounds up to 31 to avoid rounding below the calculated requirement.
Does the 10% waste allowance guarantee enough drywall?+
No. The default 10% adds material based on area, but narrow sections, irregular walls, damaged boards, and unusable offcuts may require more. Compare the estimate with a sheet layout before purchasing.
How should I account for a second layer of drywall?+
Enter the total area across all required layers rather than just the wall footprint. If every wall needs two layers, count the net wall area twice; if layers use different sheet sizes or board types, calculate each group separately.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
