About the Discount Calculator

The Discount Calculator determines the total money saved and the final sale price when a percentage discount is applied to an item. Shoppers, retail associates, and small business owners use it to quickly evaluate promotions, sales markdowns, and clearance deals.

Original price
The starting price of the product or service before any markdown, entered in dollars (typically 0 or greater).
Discount
The percentage reduction taken off the original price, entered as a percentage (typically between 0% and 100%).

Formula and method

You save = Original price × (Discount / 100)
Final price = Original price × (1 − Discount / 100)
  • Original priceThe baseline price before discounts
  • DiscountThe percentage deducted from the original price
  • You saveThe absolute dollar amount discounted
  • Final priceThe price remaining to be paid after subtracting savings

The tool converts the discount percentage into a decimal by dividing it by 100, then multiplies this by the original price to find the savings amount. It subtracts this savings from the original price to calculate the final price, with both outputs formatted to standard currency (two decimal places).

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. 1Enter the regular, non-sale price into the Original price field.
  2. 2Enter the percentage markdown offered into the Discount field.
  3. 3Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to determine how much you save.
  4. 4Subtract the savings amount from the original price to obtain the final price.

Reading your result

The 'You save' output shows the exact dollar deduction you will receive off the regular price. The 'Final price' output displays what you will pay at the register before any applicable sales tax, shipping, or extra transaction fees.

Limitations

This calculator applies a single uniform percentage discount and does not support flat-dollar deductions (such as $10 off). It does not compute sales tax, manufacturer rebates, shipping fees, or stacked/compound promotional codes.

Common questions

How do I calculate a discount in my head?+

Find 10% of the price by moving the decimal point one place to the left. For a 20% discount, double that number; for a 5% discount, halve it; and for a 25% discount, divide the original price by 4.

Does the discount apply before or after sales tax?+

In most jurisdictions, percentage discounts are applied to the retail price before sales tax is calculated, meaning you only pay tax on the discounted final price.

Can I use this for discounts greater than 100%?+

Discounts greater than 100% result in a negative final price, representing an over-reduction or store credit, though standard commercial discounts range from 0% to 100%.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
