About the Decimal Hours Calculator

The Decimal Hours Calculator converts a duration entered as whole hours, minutes and seconds into a single value in decimal hours. With the default inputs of 2 whole hours, 30 minutes and 0 seconds, the result is 2.5 hours.

Whole hours
The whole-hour portion of the duration, measured in hours, with a default of 2.
Minutes
The minute portion added to the whole hours, measured in minutes, with a default of 30.
Seconds
The second portion added to the hours and minutes, measured in seconds, with a default of 0.

Formula and method

D = H + M/60 + S/3600; with the default inputs, D = 2 + 30/60 + 0/3600 = 2.5 hours.
  • DThe total duration expressed in decimal hours.
  • HThe whole hours entered.
  • MThe minutes entered.
  • SThe seconds entered.

Divide the minutes by 60 and the seconds by 3600 to express both portions in hours, then add them to the whole hours. For the default inputs, 30/60 contributes 0.5 hours and 0/3600 contributes 0 hours, so the total is 2 + 0.5 + 0 = 2.5 hours.

How to use the Decimal Hours Calculator

  1. 1Enter the whole-hour portion in Whole hours; the default is 2.
  2. 2Enter the remaining minutes in Minutes; the default is 30.
  3. 3Enter the remaining seconds in Seconds; the default is 0.
  4. 4Read the calculated Result as decimal hours; the default inputs produce 2.5.

Reading your result

The Result row gives the entire entered duration in decimal hours. A result of 2.5 means 2 whole hours plus 0.5 of an hour, which is 30 minutes; it is not an hours-and-minutes notation.

Limitations

This is a duration conversion, not a calculation of elapsed time between clock readings. It assumes 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute. For standard duration entry, use nonnegative whole numbers, with minutes and seconds each below 60. Some conversions produce repeating decimals, so a displayed result may be rounded. The conversion itself does not apply payroll rounding or billing rules.

Common questions

Why do 2 hours and 30 minutes become 2.5 rather than 2.30?+

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour. Since 30/60 = 0.5, adding that fraction to 2 hours gives 2.5 hours.

How are seconds included in decimal hours?+

The calculator divides seconds by 3600, the number of seconds in an hour. With the default Seconds value of 0, this term adds nothing to the result.

Should I enter the duration again in Minutes after entering Whole hours?+

No. The fields are additive portions of one duration. For the default example, enter 2 in Whole hours, 30 in Minutes and 0 in Seconds without also including those whole hours in the Minutes field.

Can I use the decimal-hours result on a timesheet?+

The result expresses duration in a format commonly used on timesheets: the default duration becomes 2.5 hours. Check your employer's required decimal precision and rounding policy before submitting it.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
