About the Common Factor Calculator

The Common Factor Calculator finds all positive integers that divide two or more given numbers without leaving a remainder. Students, educators, and anyone working on simplifying fractions or algebraic factoring can use it to identify all shared divisors. It processes a comma-separated list of numbers and returns their complete list of common factors.

Numbers
A comma- or space-separated list of positive integers (for example, 12, 18, 30).

Formula and method

Common Factors = factors(gcd(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n))
  • a_1, a_2, ..., a_nThe input list of integers
  • gcdGreatest Common Divisor of the set of integers
  • factors(g)All positive integer divisors of integer g

The calculator parses the input string into a list of integers and computes their cumulative greatest common divisor (GCD) using the Euclidean algorithm across the set. It then calculates all positive integers that divide that GCD evenly and displays them in ascending order.

Worked example

These are the calculator's starting values and the results it actually produces for them.

Inputs

  • Numbers12, 18, 30

Results

  • Common factors1, 2, 3, 6

How to use the Common Factor Calculator

  1. 1Parse the input text into an array of separate integers.
  2. 2Compute the greatest common divisor (GCD) iteratively across all numbers in the list.
  3. 3Find all positive integer divisors of that final GCD.
  4. 4Format and display the resulting factors as a comma-separated list.

Reading your result

The output displays every integer that divides all input values evenly. The first value listed will always be 1, and the final value in the list is the greatest common factor (GCF or GCD). If the only result shown is 1, the input numbers are coprime.

Limitations

The calculator is intended for integers and ignores non-integer components. It outputs only positive integer factors and does not include negative divisors. Entering very large integers may lead to slower execution during factor enumeration.

Common questions

What is the difference between a common factor and the greatest common factor?+

A common factor is any number that divides all given numbers evenly. The greatest common factor (GCF or GCD) is simply the largest value among all the common factors.

Can two numbers have no common factors?+

No. All positive integers share at least the number 1 as a common factor. When 1 is the only shared divisor, the numbers are described as relatively prime or coprime.

How can I find common factors for more than three numbers?+

Enter all numbers separated by commas into the input field. The calculator processes any quantity of numbers by determining the shared divisors across the entire set.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
