About the College Cost Calculator

This calculator estimates the total future tuition and living expenses for college by compounding current annual costs over the child's pre-college and college years. It also calculates the fixed monthly savings contribution required between now and matriculation to fully fund that cost, taking into account current savings and expected investment growth.

Annual cost today
Current total cost per year for tuition, room, board, and fees in dollars (typically $10,000 to $90,000).
Years until college
Number of years remaining until the student begins their first year of college (e.g., 0 to 18).
Years in college
The anticipated duration of the degree program in years, typically 4 for a standard bachelor's degree.
Cost inflation
Annual rate at which college expenses are projected to grow, entered as a percentage (historically around 3% to 6%).
Savings return
Anticipated annual investment return on your savings before college begins, expressed as an annual percentage rate compounded monthly.
Saved so far
Current balance already saved or invested in dedicated college funds (e.g., 529 plan, brokerage, or savings accounts) in dollars.

Formula and method

Total Cost = ∑ (Cost × (1 + i)^(Y + t)) for t = 0 to (D - 1)
Need = Total Cost − Have × (1 + r)^k
Monthly Saving = Need × r / ((1 + r)^k − 1)
  • CostCurrent annual cost of college
  • iAnnual college cost inflation rate (inf / 100)
  • YYears until college begins
  • DYears in college (duration)
  • rMonthly investment return rate (Savings return / 1200)
  • kTotal months until college starts (Years until college × 12)
  • HaveAmount saved so far
  • NeedUnfunded college cost after subtracting future value of current savings

Each college year's cost is compounded individually by the inflation rate based on the elapsed time from today until that academic year. The future value of current savings at matriculation is subtracted from the total projected expense; the remaining balance is then converted into an ordinary monthly annuity savings payment, capped at a minimum of zero if existing savings exceed projected costs.

How to use the College Cost Calculator

  1. 1Inflate the base annual cost across each year of attendance: Cost × (1 + inflation)^(years + t) for each year t from 0 to duration − 1.
  2. 2Sum the individual inflated annual figures to determine the Total Future Cost.
  3. 3Grow current savings to the start of college using monthly compound interest: Have × (1 + r)^k.
  4. 4Subtract the future value of current savings from the total cost, then solve the standard sinking fund annuity formula to find the monthly contribution.

Reading your result

Total future cost reflects the cumulative price tag of all college years adjusted for expected higher education inflation. Monthly saving needed shows the dollar amount to deposit each month from today until college begins to cover the projected balance without borrowing.

Limitations

The calculation assumes monthly contributions stop entirely the day college starts, rather than continuing through the enrollment years. It also assumes a constant investment rate of return and constant inflation rate throughout, with no adjustments for taxes, financial aid, or investment earnings earned during the college years.

Common questions

Why does the calculation stop compounding savings when college begins?+

The model assumes all required funds must be fully accumulated by matriculation day, simplifying the target into a single pre-college accumulation phase.

What happens if my current savings will grow to exceed the total future cost?+

The calculation clamps the monthly savings needed at $0.00 so that a negative contribution is not displayed.

Does this estimate account for taxes on investment gains?+

No, it assumes tax-free growth, which is typical for qualified distributions from a 529 college savings plan or Coverdell ESA.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
