About the Caulk Cartridge Calculator
The Caulk Cartridge Calculator estimates how many cartridges you need to fill a rectangular joint using its length, width, and depth. It adds your chosen waste allowance and rounds up to whole cartridges based on the cartridge volume.
- Joint length (m)
- The total length of the joint to fill, measured in metres, with a default of 20 m.
- Joint width (mm)
- The width of the rectangular joint, measured in millimetres, with a default of 5 mm.
- Joint depth (mm)
- The depth of caulk filling the joint, measured in millimetres, with a default of 5 mm.
- Cartridge volume (mL)
- The nominal volume of caulk in each cartridge, measured in millilitres, with a default of 300 mL.
- Waste (%)
- The extra caulk allowance added to the calculated joint volume, expressed as a percentage, with a default of 10%.
Formula and method
V = L × W × D; V_required = V × (1 + p / 100); N = ceil(V_required / C). With the default inputs: V = 20 × 5 × 5 = 500 mL; V_required = 500 × (1 + 10 / 100) = 550 mL; N = ceil(550 / 300) = 2 cartridges.
- LJoint length in metres.
- WJoint width in millimetres.
- DDepth of caulk in the joint in millimetres.
- VRectangular joint volume in millilitres before waste.
- pWaste allowance as a percentage.
- V_requiredEstimated caulk volume in millilitres including waste.
- CVolume per cartridge in millilitres.
- NNumber of whole cartridges required; ceil means round upward to the next whole number.
Multiply joint length by width and depth to calculate the rectangular fill volume. With length in metres and both cross-sectional dimensions in millimetres, the numerical product is already in millilitres: converting metres to millimetres and cubic millimetres to millilitres cancels the conversion factors. Increase this volume by the waste percentage, divide by the cartridge volume, and round upward to a whole cartridge.

How to use the Caulk Cartridge Calculator
- 1Measure the joint length in metres; add lengths together only when the joints have the same width and fill depth.
- 2Enter the joint width and intended caulk fill depth in millimetres.
- 3Enter the cartridge volume in millilitres from the product label.
- 4Set the waste allowance to cover expected nozzle residue, tooling, and application losses.
- 5Calculate and read the whole-cartridge result; the default inputs of 20 m, 5 mm, 5 mm, 300 mL, and 10% produce 2 cartridges.
Reading your result
The result row reports the estimated number of whole cartridges to have available, including the selected waste allowance. With the default inputs, the joint needs 500 mL before waste and 550 mL including waste; dividing by 300 mL per cartridge gives approximately 1.83, so the displayed result is 2 cartridges. This is a purchase quantity estimate, not a prediction that every cartridge will be completely emptied.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a uniform rectangular cross-section along the full joint length. Triangular beads, concave finishes, irregular gaps, and changing joint dimensions can produce different material requirements. Waste is a simple percentage added to the theoretical volume, not a guarantee against shortages. Use positive dimensions and cartridge volume, and a nonnegative waste percentage. The calculator does not determine suitable sealant chemistry, joint design, backer rod requirements, or allowable width-to-depth ratios; follow the sealant manufacturer's instructions.
Common questions
Why do the default inputs require 2 cartridges rather than 1?+
The 20 m long, 5 mm wide, and 5 mm deep joint holds 500 mL. Adding 10% waste raises the requirement to 550 mL, which exceeds one 300 mL cartridge, so the calculator rounds up to 2.
Should joint depth include the space occupied by backer rod?+
No. Enter only the depth that will be filled with caulk, not the full cavity depth behind the backer rod. The calculator still assumes that this caulk-filled area is rectangular.
Can I use this calculator for a triangular bead in a corner?+
Not directly with the bead's width and depth: multiplying those dimensions assumes a rectangle and overestimates a truly triangular cross-section. This tool is intended for rectangular joint fill.
Can I combine several joints into one calculation?+
Yes, if they share the same width and caulk fill depth, add their lengths and enter the total. For different cross-sections, calculate each waste-adjusted volume separately, sum those volumes, and divide by the cartridge volume before rounding up if all joints use the same caulk.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
