About the Brick Count Calculator

The Brick Count Calculator estimates the number of bricks needed to cover a wall area using nominal brick face dimensions that include mortar joints. It applies your waste allowance and rounds up to a whole brick, helping you plan quantities for a single leaf of brickwork.

Wall area (m²)
The wall face area to cover in square metres, excluding openings if appropriate, with a default of 20 m².
Nominal brick length (mm)
The horizontal face length of one brick plus its allocated vertical mortar joint in millimetres, with a default of 225 mm.
Nominal course height (mm)
The height of one brick course including its horizontal mortar joint in millimetres, with a default of 75 mm.
Waste (%)
The percentage added to the base brick quantity for cutting, breakage and spare bricks, with a default of 5%.

Formula and method

N = ceil([A × 1,000,000 / (L × H)] × [1 + W / 100]). With the default inputs: N = ceil([20 × 1,000,000 / (225 × 75)] × 1.05) = ceil(1,244.444…) = 1,245 bricks.
  • NEstimated total number of bricks, including waste and rounded up to a whole brick.
  • AWall face area in square metres.
  • LNominal brick length in millimetres, including the allocated vertical mortar joint.
  • HNominal course height in millimetres, including the horizontal mortar joint.
  • WWaste allowance expressed as a percentage.
  • ceilThe ceiling operation, which rounds a value up to the next whole number unless it is already whole.

Convert the nominal brick face dimensions into a coverage area: 225 × 75 / 1,000,000 = 0.016875 m² per brick. Divide the 20 m² wall area by this coverage to obtain approximately 1,185.185 bricks before waste. Apply the 5% allowance to get approximately 1,244.444 bricks, then round up once at the end to obtain 1,245 bricks.

How to use the Brick Count Calculator

  1. 1Measure the wall face area in square metres and subtract any openings you want excluded; enter this as Wall area (m²).
  2. 2Enter the nominal brick length in millimetres, making sure it already includes the allocated vertical mortar joint.
  3. 3Enter the nominal course height in millimetres, including the horizontal mortar joint.
  4. 4Set the waste percentage to allow for expected cutting, breakage and spare bricks.
  5. 5Read the whole-brick result and check it against your wall layout and supplier's pack quantities before ordering.

Reading your result

The Result row shows the estimated total brick quantity after adding waste and rounding up. With a wall area of 20 m², nominal dimensions of 225 mm by 75 mm, and 5% waste, Result = 1,245 bricks. This is a count of individual bricks, not packs, pallets or a mortar quantity.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a uniform nominal face module across a single leaf of brickwork. It does not automatically account for wall thickness, additional leaves, piers, corners, special bricks, bond patterns or detailed cutting layouts. Openings must be deducted from the entered area yourself. Mortar joints are already included in the nominal dimensions and must not be added again. The waste allowance is a planning assumption, not a guarantee of sufficiency. Area and dimensions must be positive, and waste must be nonnegative.

Common questions

Should I enter the brick's actual dimensions or its nominal dimensions?+

Enter nominal dimensions that include mortar joints: brick face length plus the allocated vertical joint, and brick height plus the horizontal joint. Using actual brick-only dimensions would overestimate the number needed for the same wall face area.

Does the wall area include doors and windows?+

The calculator uses the area exactly as entered. Subtract door and window openings first if you want a net wall area; it does not detect or deduct openings automatically.

Why does the default calculation return 1,245 bricks?+

The 225 mm by 75 mm nominal face covers 0.016875 m². Dividing 20 m² by that area and adding 5% gives approximately 1,244.444 bricks, which rounds up to 1,245.

Can this estimate bricks for a wall with more than one brick leaf?+

The result covers one leaf using the specified face dimensions. For multiple brick leaves, calculate each leaf's face area and dimensions separately and combine the quantities; do not assume the calculator accounts for wall thickness.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
