About the Boat Loan Calculator

This calculator determines the monthly payment, total repayment amount, and total interest cost for a fixed-rate boat loan. Prospective boat buyers and current owners can use it to evaluate financing terms before borrowing from a marine lender or bank.

Boat price
The total purchase price of the vessel including accessories, in dollars (sensible range: $5,000 to $2,000,000+).
Down payment
The upfront cash or trade-in equity applied toward the purchase price, in dollars (sensible range: $0 up to the boat price).
Rate
The annual interest rate (APR) charged by the lender, as a percentage (sensible range: 3% to 20%).
Term
The duration of the financing agreement, in years (sensible range: 1 to 20 years).

Formula and method

P = Boat Price − Down Payment; r = Rate / 1200; n = Term × 12; M = P × [r(1 + r)^n] / [(1 + r)^n − 1]; Total Payments = M × n; Total Interest = Total Payments − P
  • PLoan principal (boat price minus down payment)
  • rMonthly interest rate (annual interest rate divided by 12 and converted to a decimal)
  • nTotal number of monthly payments (term in years multiplied by 12)
  • MFixed monthly payment

The tool computes the financed principal by subtracting the down payment from the boat purchase price. It converts the annual interest rate to an unrounded monthly rate and multiplies the term years by 12 to determine the number of payments. The standard fixed-rate amortization equation produces the monthly payment, which is multiplied by the payment count to find total payments and interest.

How to use the Boat Loan Calculator

  1. 1Subtract the down payment from the boat price to calculate the net loan principal.
  2. 2Divide the annual interest rate by 1,200 to find the periodic monthly interest rate.
  3. 3Multiply the loan term in years by 12 to find the total payment periods.
  4. 4Apply the standard amortization formula to determine the monthly payment, total lifetime payments, and total interest.

Reading your result

The 'Monthly payment' represents the fixed principal and interest amount owed each month. 'Total of payments' shows the cumulative sum paid across the entire loan term, while 'Total interest' reveals the finance charge paid to the lender beyond the original amount borrowed.

Limitations

This calculation reflects principal and interest only. It does not include sales tax, registration fees, marine survey costs, slip or marina fees, annual maintenance, or required marine insurance coverage.

Common questions

Why are boat loan terms typically longer than auto loans?+

Boats often carry higher price tags and have longer operational lifespans than automobiles, so marine lenders regularly offer terms ranging from 10 to 20 years to make monthly payments manageable.

How does a larger down payment affect total loan costs?+

A larger down payment directly reduces the financed principal. Because interest accrues on a lower starting balance each month, you lower both your required monthly payment and the total interest paid over time.

Does this calculation include marine insurance or taxes?+

No. The calculator only accounts for the financed principal and lender interest rate. Taxes, documentation fees, slip rental, fuel, and insurance must be budgeted separately.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
