About the Baseboard Trim Calculator
The Baseboard Trim Calculator estimates the trim length needed around a rectangular room after subtracting openings where no baseboard will be installed. It adds your chosen waste percentage to allow for cuts and offcuts, giving a total length in metres to use when planning your purchase.
- Room length (m)
- The length of the rectangular room in metres, with a default of 5 m.
- Room width (m)
- The width of the rectangular room in metres, with a default of 4 m.
- Excluded openings (m)
- The combined width in metres of doorways and other wall sections where no baseboard is needed, with a default of 1.8 m.
- Waste (%)
- The extra trim allowance added as a percentage of the net installation length, with a default of 10%.
Formula and method
P = 2(L + W); N = P − O; T = N × (1 + w/100). With the default inputs: T = [2(5 + 4) − 1.8] × (1 + 10/100) = 16.2 × 1.10 = 17.82 m.
- LRoom length in metres.
- WRoom width in metres.
- OTotal excluded opening width in metres.
- wWaste percentage entered as a percentage value, such as 10 for 10%.
- PFull rectangular room perimeter in metres.
- NNet baseboard installation length in metres after subtracting openings.
- TTotal estimated trim length in metres, including waste.
Calculate the rectangular perimeter by adding the room length and width and doubling the sum. Subtract the combined excluded openings, then apply the waste percentage to that remaining length. For the default inputs, the perimeter is 18 m, the net installation length is 16.2 m, and the waste allowance is 1.62 m, producing a total of 17.82 m.

How to use the Baseboard Trim Calculator
- 1Measure the room's length and width along the walls in metres and enter them in the corresponding fields.
- 2Add together the widths of all sections where baseboard will not be installed and enter that total under Excluded openings.
- 3Enter a waste percentage to allow for cutting losses and offcuts.
- 4Calculate the estimate; the default inputs of 5 m, 4 m, 1.8 m and 10% give 17.82 m.
- 5Use the total to plan your purchase, then check available stock lengths and your cut layout before ordering.
Reading your result
The Result row is the total estimated trim length in metres, including the waste allowance. With the default inputs, 17.82 m means 16.2 m of net baseboard coverage plus 1.62 m of extra material. It is a linear length, not an area or a count of trim boards.
Limitations
This calculation assumes a rectangular room with four straight walls. It does not account separately for alcoves, columns, angled walls, or extra trim returns. Exclusions must represent sections where trim is actually omitted; do not subtract windows if baseboard runs beneath them. Use positive room dimensions, nonnegative openings and waste, and an opening total no greater than the perimeter. Waste is a planning allowance rather than a guarantee, and the result is not rounded to purchasable board lengths or optimized for individual cuts.
Common questions
Should I subtract doorways and windows from the baseboard length?+
Subtract doorways and other sections where baseboard will not be fitted, measuring the actual gap in the baseboard run. Do not subtract a window when baseboard continues along the wall below it.
Why do the default inputs give 17.82 m rather than 18 m?+
The room perimeter is 2 × (5 + 4) = 18 m. Subtracting 1.8 m of openings leaves 16.2 m, and adding 10% waste gives 16.2 × 1.10 = 17.82 m.
Can I use this calculator for an L-shaped room?+
Not directly from the room's overall length and width, because those dimensions do not describe every wall segment. For an L-shaped room, measure and add the actual baseboard runs, then apply a waste allowance to that total.
Does the result tell me how many baseboard boards to buy?+
No. It gives total linear metres, including waste. Dividing that total by the chosen stock length and rounding up gives a preliminary board count, but you must also check whether the required wall runs can be cut from those boards with acceptable joints.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
