About the 403(b) Contribution Projection Calculator

The 403(b) Contribution Projection Calculator projects your retirement account balance using your current savings, fixed monthly employee and employer deposits, and an assumed annual nominal return. It shows both the projected balance and future deposits over your remaining saving years. This tool does not apply statutory contribution limits or determine whether your deposits are permitted under your 403(b) plan.

Current balance ($)
Your existing 403(b) account balance in dollars at the start of the projection, with a default of $45,000.
Monthly employee deposit ($)
The amount you contribute to the account each month in dollars, with a default of $600.
Monthly employer deposit ($)
The amount your employer contributes to the account each month in dollars, with a default of $250.
Annual nominal return (%)
The assumed nominal annual investment return expressed as a percentage and divided by 12 for monthly compounding, with a default of 6%.
Years remaining (years)
The length of the projection in years, with a default of 25 years.

Formula and method

r = R / (100 × 12); n = 12 × Y; C = E + H. For r ≠ 0, projected balance B = P × (1 + r)^n + C × [(1 + r)^n − 1] / r. For r = 0, B = P + C × n. Future deposits D = C × n.
  • PCurrent account balance in dollars.
  • EMonthly employee deposit in dollars.
  • HMonthly employer deposit in dollars.
  • CCombined monthly employee and employer deposits in dollars.
  • RAnnual nominal return entered as a percentage, such as 6 for 6%.
  • rMonthly return expressed as a decimal.
  • YYears remaining in the projection.
  • nNumber of months in the projection.
  • BProjected ending account balance in dollars.
  • DTotal future employee and employer deposits in dollars, excluding the current balance and investment growth.

The calculator adds the employee and employer deposits, converts the nominal annual return to a monthly rate, and converts years to months. It compounds the current balance for the full period and adds the future value of equal deposits made at the end of each month. With the defaults, P = $45,000, C = $600 + $250 = $850, r = 0.005, and n = 300. The projected balance is $789,968.51, and future deposits are $850 × 300 = $255,000.00. Dollar results are rounded to cents.

Reading your result

Projected balance is the estimated ending account value, including your current balance, future employee and employer deposits, and compounded investment growth; the default result is $789,968.51. Future deposits is the total new money contributed by you and your employer during the projection, without investment growth or the starting balance; the default result is $255,000.00. The difference between these two rows is not investment growth alone because it also includes your starting balance.

Limitations

The projection assumes constant monthly deposits, end-of-month deposit timing, monthly compounding, and a constant nominal annual return. Actual investment returns fluctuate, and the result is not guaranteed or adjusted for inflation. Fees, taxes, withdrawals, changes in employment, and employer vesting conditions are not modeled separately. Employer deposits are treated as fixed dollar amounts rather than calculated from salary or matching rules. The calculator does not enforce statutory employee deferral limits, combined contribution limits, catch-up eligibility, or plan-specific restrictions; an output does not establish that a contribution amount is allowable.

Common questions

Does this calculator cap my 403(b) contributions at IRS limits?+

No. It projects the monthly amounts you enter without reducing them to statutory limits. Check current IRS guidance and your plan's rules separately, including any applicable catch-up provisions.

Does the employer deposit field calculate my employer's match?+

No. Enter the dollar amount you expect your employer to deposit each month. The calculator does not derive a match from your salary, contribution percentage, or employer matching formula.

Why are future deposits $255,000.00 in the default example?+

The $600 monthly employee deposit and $250 monthly employer deposit total $850 per month. Over 25 years, or 300 months, these deposits total $255,000.00; this row excludes the initial $45,000 and all investment growth.

Does the $789,968.51 projected balance represent spendable retirement income?+

No. It is a projected account balance, not an after-tax withdrawal amount or monthly retirement income. The calculator does not distinguish traditional and Roth tax treatment, apply withdrawal taxes, or adjust the balance for inflation.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
