Weight (force) of a mass on different planets.
About the Weight Calculator
The Weight Calculator determines the gravitational downward force exerted on an object of a given mass on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter. In physics, mass is the intrinsic quantity of matter in an object, whereas weight is the force exerted on that mass by local gravity. This tool is useful for physics students, educators, and science enthusiasts comparing gravitational forces across celestial bodies.
- Mass
- The constant amount of matter in the object, measured in kilograms (kg). Typical human values range from 40 to 120 kg, but any positive mass can be entered.
Formula and method
W = m × g
- WWeight (force) in newtons (N)
- mMass in kilograms (kg)
- gSurface gravitational acceleration: 9.81 m/s² (Earth), 1.62 m/s² (Moon), 3.71 m/s² (Mars), or 24.79 m/s² (Jupiter)
The entered mass in kilograms is multiplied by each body's standard surface gravitational acceleration. The gravitational constants used are 9.81 m/s² for Earth, 1.62 m/s² for the Moon, 3.71 m/s² for Mars, and 24.79 m/s² for Jupiter. Each resulting force in newtons (N) is rounded to one decimal place.

Inputs
- Mass70 kg
Results
- Earth686.7 N
- Moon113.4 N
- Mars259.7 N
- Jupiter1,735.3 N
How to use the Weight Calculator
- 1Enter the object's mass in kilograms (kg).
- 2Multiply the mass by 9.81 to determine Earth weight in newtons.
- 3Multiply the mass by 1.62 for the Moon, 3.71 for Mars, and 24.79 for Jupiter.
- 4Display each resulting weight rounded to 1 decimal place with the unit N.
Reading your result
The results display the gravitational pull acting on the object at the surface of each celestial body in newtons (N). An object on the Moon experiences roughly 16.5% of its Earth weight, on Mars about 37.8%, and on Jupiter roughly 2.5 times its Earth weight. Mass remains identical across all locations, but the resulting force changes drastically with local gravity.
Limitations
The calculation assumes standard mean surface-level gravitational acceleration and does not adjust for altitude, latitude, or centrifugal effects from planetary rotation. For gas giants like Jupiter, the value represents gravity at the 1-bar atmospheric pressure level rather than a solid surface. Additionally, it does not convert newtons to everyday weight units like pounds-force or kilograms-force.
Common questions
What is the difference between mass and weight?+
Mass is an intrinsic property measuring the amount of matter in an object, expressed in kilograms (kg), and never changes based on location. Weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass, expressed in newtons (N), and changes depending on the local gravitational field strength.
How do I convert newtons to pounds of force?+
One pound-force (lbf) is approximately equal to 4.448 newtons (N). To convert any of the calculator's outputs to pounds-force, divide the value in newtons by 4.448.
Why does Jupiter have such high gravity if it is made of gas?+
Even though Jupiter is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, its total mass is more than 317 times that of Earth. Despite its large radius, its enormous mass produces a surface-level gravitational pull of about 24.79 m/s² at its outer atmosphere.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
