About the Critical Swim Speed Calculator

The Critical Swim Speed Calculator estimates your critical swim speed from maximal 200 m and 400 m swim trials. It reports speed in metres per second and the equivalent pace per 100 m, giving you an approximate benchmark for sustained swim training.

200 m trial time (seconds)
Your total time to complete a maximal 200 m swim, entered in seconds; the default is 210.
400 m trial time (seconds)
Your total time to complete a maximal 400 m swim, entered in seconds; the default is 450.

Formula and method

CSS = (D400 − D200) / (t400 − t200); P100 = 100 / CSS. With the defaults: CSS = (400 − 200) / (450 − 210) = 200 / 240 ≈ 0.83 m/s; P100 = 100 × 240 / 200 = 120 seconds per 100 m.
  • CSSEstimated critical swim speed in metres per second.
  • D400The longer trial distance, fixed at 400 metres.
  • D200The shorter trial distance, fixed at 200 metres.
  • t400The 400 m trial time in seconds.
  • t200The 200 m trial time in seconds.
  • P100Estimated critical pace expressed as seconds per 100 metres.

Subtract the 200 m time from the 400 m time, then divide the 200 m distance difference by that time difference to estimate critical swim speed. Convert the unrounded speed to pace by dividing 100 metres by the speed. With 210 and 450 seconds, the time difference is 240 seconds, producing a displayed speed of 0.83 m/s and a pace of 120 seconds per 100 m.

How to use the Critical Swim Speed Calculator

  1. 1Complete maximal 200 m and 400 m trials with adequate recovery between efforts, using the same stroke and comparable pool conditions.
  2. 2Enter the total 200 m trial time in seconds; the default is 210.
  3. 3Enter the total 400 m trial time in seconds; the default is 450.
  4. 4Check that both times are positive and the 400 m time exceeds the 200 m time, then calculate.
  5. 5Read the speed, pace, and approximation note together, and use the result as a training benchmark rather than a guaranteed sustainable pace.

Reading your result

Critical swim speed = 0.83 m/s is the estimated speed derived from the difference between the two trial distances and times, not your average speed in either trial. Critical pace per 100 m = 120 seconds means an equivalent pace of 2:00 per 100 m; lower pace values indicate faster swimming. Note = Approximation; individual results vary. This note means the result is an estimate, not a directly measured physiological threshold.

Limitations

This two-point estimate assumes both swims are genuinely maximal and performed under comparable conditions. Pacing, fatigue, timing errors, pool length, turns, push-offs, stroke choice, and equipment can affect the result. Positive times with the 400 m time greater than the 200 m time are mathematically necessary but do not guarantee a realistic estimate. Critical swim speed does not establish how long you can sustain that pace and is not a substitute for individualized coaching or physiological testing.

Common questions

Why does the calculator use both 200 m and 400 m trials?+

It estimates the slope between two distance–time points: the extra 200 metres divided by the extra time required. This differs from simply calculating average speed over the 400 m trial.

Why does 0.83 m/s correspond to exactly 120 seconds per 100 m in the default example?+

The displayed speed is rounded. Pace is calculated from the unrounded value of 200 / 240 m/s, giving exactly 120 seconds per 100 m; using the rounded 0.83 value would introduce a small discrepancy.

Can I enter trial times from 200-yard and 400-yard swims?+

No. This calculator fixes the distances at 200 metres and 400 metres. Yard-based trials would produce incorrectly labelled metric results.

Should I swim every training session at the calculated critical pace?+

No. Critical pace is a benchmark for planning some sustained efforts or intervals, not a target for every swim. Appropriate pace, interval length, and recovery depend on your training goals, fitness, and how the effort feels.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
