About the Swimming SWOLF Calculator

The Swimming SWOLF Calculator adds the time taken to swim one pool length in seconds to the number of individual arm strokes used for that length. With the default inputs of 25 seconds and 18 individual arm strokes, the SWOLF score is 43. Use this tool to track changes in your time-and-stroke combination over comparable pool lengths.

Time for one pool length (seconds)
The elapsed time to swim one pool length, measured in seconds, with a default of 25.
Individual arm strokes for that length
The count of individual arm strokes taken over the same pool length, measured in strokes rather than full stroke cycles, with a default of 18.

Formula and method

SWOLF = t + n = 25 + 18 = 43
  • SWOLFThe combined time-and-stroke score for one pool length, reported as a score rather than a physical unit.
  • tTime for one pool length in seconds.
  • nNumber of individual arm strokes taken during that same length.

The calculator adds the entered time in seconds directly to the entered individual arm-stroke count. It does not average multiple lengths or adjust for pool distance. For the default inputs, adding 25 and 18 gives a SWOLF score of 43.

How to use the Swimming SWOLF Calculator

  1. 1Swim one pool length and measure its elapsed time using a consistent start and finish convention.
  2. 2Count the individual arm strokes taken during that same length; for alternating-arm strokes, count each arm separately.
  3. 3Enter the time in seconds in the time field; the default is 25.
  4. 4Enter the individual arm-stroke count in the stroke field; the default is 18.
  5. 5Read the SWOLF score and comparison note; the default inputs produce 43.

Reading your result

The SWOLF row shows the sum of time in seconds and individual arm strokes: 43 for the default inputs. A lower score means a lower combined time-and-stroke total, but does not by itself prove better technique or fitness. The Note row states: "Compare only with the same pool length and stroke-counting convention." For more meaningful tracking, also keep swimming stroke, effort, and timing conditions consistent.

Limitations

SWOLF is a simple tracking metric, not a direct measurement of energy efficiency, fitness, or swimming technique. This calculator assumes both inputs describe the same single pool length and that strokes are counted as individual arm strokes. It does not account for pool distance, swimming stroke, body size, push-off distance, underwater travel, or effort. A lower score can result from a longer push-off or fewer strokes even if swimming speed does not improve, so review time and stroke count separately as well.

Common questions

Should I count each arm stroke or a full stroke cycle?+

This calculator expects individual arm strokes. For freestyle or backstroke, count each arm separately, not one left-and-right pair as a single count. If your watch reports full cycles, check its counting method before entering or comparing its data.

Can I compare SWOLF scores from different pool lengths?+

Not directly. A longer length generally requires more time and strokes, and this calculator does not normalize for distance. Compare only with the same pool length and stroke-counting convention.

Does a SWOLF score of 43 mean I am swimming efficiently?+

The score of 43 means that 25 seconds plus 18 individual arm strokes equals 43. There is no universal efficiency rating for that score; its usefulness comes from comparison with your own swims under similar conditions.

Can I enter the time and strokes for a whole workout?+

No. This tool is defined for one pool length, so entering workout totals would produce a sum that is not a single-length SWOLF score. Use the time and stroke count from the same individual length.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
