Speed, distance or time.
About the Speed Calculator
This calculator determines average travel speed based on total distance and elapsed time. It provides the calculated speed in kilometers per hour, miles per hour, and meters per second, useful for runners, cyclists, and drivers evaluating trip performance.
- Distance
- The total distance traveled, entered in kilometers (e.g., values greater than 0).
- Time
- The total elapsed duration of travel, entered in decimal hours (e.g., 1.5 hours for 1 hour and 30 minutes).
Formula and method
Speed (km/h) = Distance / Time Speed (mph) = Speed (km/h) × 0.621371 Speed (m/s) = Speed (km/h) / 3.6
- DistanceTotal distance traveled in kilometers (km)
- TimeElapsed travel duration in decimal hours (hours)
- km/hSpeed in kilometers per hour
- mphSpeed in miles per hour
- m/sSpeed in meters per second (SI unit of velocity)
The calculator divides the distance in kilometers by time in hours to produce speed in kilometers per hour. It then converts this value to miles per hour by multiplying by 0.621371 and to meters per second by dividing by 3.6. Each result is rounded to three decimal places.
Worked example
These are the calculator's starting values and the results it actually produces for them.
Inputs
- Distance100 km
- Time1.25 hours
Results
- Speed80 km/h
- In mph49.71
- In m/s22.222
How to use the Speed Calculator
- 1Enter the total distance covered in kilometers.
- 2Enter the total duration taken in decimal hours.
- 3Divide distance by time to obtain the base speed in km/h.
- 4Convert the base speed into miles per hour (mph) and meters per second (m/s).
Reading your result
The primary result shows your mean velocity in kilometers per hour (km/h). The secondary rows express that same rate of travel in statute miles per hour (mph) for imperial tracking and meters per second (m/s) for standard scientific measurement.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a constant average speed across the entire duration and does not account for acceleration, stops, or terrain variations. Time must be entered in decimal hours rather than standard hours and minutes (for example, 45 minutes must be input as 0.75 hours).
Common questions
How do I enter minutes into the time field?+
Convert minutes into decimal hours by dividing the minutes by 60. For example, 1 hour and 15 minutes is entered as 1.25 hours (15 / 60 = 0.25).
Does this tool calculate instantaneous speed or average speed?+
It calculates average speed over the entire duration entered, not real-time or peak speed changes.
Why is dividing km/h by 3.6 used to get m/s?+
One kilometer is 1,000 meters and one hour is 3,600 seconds. Dividing 1,000 by 3,600 simplifies to dividing by 3.6.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
