About the Session RPE Training Load Calculator
The Session RPE Training Load Calculator estimates Foster session training load by multiplying session duration in minutes by your overall perceived exertion on a 0–10 scale. It expresses the result in arbitrary units so you can track perceived training demand across your own sessions. With the default duration of 60 minutes and session RPE of 6, the session training load is 360 arbitrary units.
- Session duration (minutes)
- The total duration of the training session in minutes, with a default of 60 minutes.
- Session RPE on a 0–10 scale
- Your rating of perceived exertion for the session as a whole, expressed on a unitless scale from 0 (rest) to 10 (maximal effort), with a default of 6.
Formula and method
L = D × R; with the default inputs, L = 60 × 6 = 360 arbitrary units.
- LSession training load, expressed in arbitrary units (AU).
- DSession duration in minutes.
- ROverall session rating of perceived exertion on a 0–10 scale.
Multiply the entered session duration in minutes by the overall session RPE. The calculation applies no additional weighting or conversion: 60 minutes multiplied by an RPE of 6 gives a session training load of 360 AU.

How to use the Session RPE Training Load Calculator
- 1Record the session duration in minutes, using a consistent approach to including warm-up, cool-down, and rest periods.
- 2After the session, rate how hard the entire session felt on the 0–10 RPE scale rather than rating only its hardest part.
- 3Enter the duration and session RPE; the default inputs are 60 minutes and 6.
- 4Read the calculated session training load: the default inputs produce 360 arbitrary units.
- 5Log the result alongside the session type and date to compare your training load over time.
Reading your result
The Session training load output row shows the product of session duration and session RPE in arbitrary units. The default result of 360 AU represents the combined duration and perceived effort of that session; it is not a calorie estimate, percentage, or fitness score. A higher value reflects a longer session, a higher perceived effort, or both. Interpret it relative to your own consistently recorded sessions rather than a universal good-or-bad threshold.
Limitations
Session RPE is subjective and can vary with fatigue, sleep, stress, environment, and familiarity with the scale. The calculation assumes a nonnegative duration in minutes and an RPE between 0 and 10. It reduces the session to one value, so different combinations of duration and intensity can produce the same load without producing identical physiological effects. It does not measure mechanical load, calories burned, recovery needs, or injury risk, and direct comparisons between people or activity types require caution.
Common questions
When should I record session RPE?+
The traditional Foster session-RPE approach collects the rating about 30 minutes after exercise to reduce the influence of the final effort. Use a consistent timing routine and rate the whole session.
Should session duration include warm-up, cool-down, and rest periods?+
For a whole-session measure, include warm-up, cool-down, and planned within-session recovery periods. Exclude unrelated time before or after training, and keep your recording convention consistent.
Is a session training load of 360 AU high?+
There is no universal threshold that makes 360 AU high or low. Here it comes from 60 minutes at session RPE 6; compare it with your usual sessions and recent training history.
Can I add session training loads to track a week?+
Yes. Sum the AU values for all sessions in the week, using the same duration and RPE recording conventions. This gives a weekly total, but the total alone does not show how load was distributed or whether recovery was adequate.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
