About the Savings Goal Contribution Calculator
The Savings Goal Contribution Calculator finds the equal month-end deposits needed to reach a target balance, accounting for your current savings and a constant monthly compounded interest rate. With a $25,000 target, $5,000 in current savings, a 4% annual nominal rate, and a 36-month saving period, the required monthly deposit is $507.15.
- Target balance ($)
- The total balance you want at the end of the saving period, in dollars; the default is $25,000.
- Current savings ($)
- The amount already saved and available to earn interest throughout the saving period, in dollars; the default is $5,000.
- Annual nominal rate (%)
- The annual nominal interest rate, expressed as a percentage and divided by 12 to obtain the monthly rate; the default is 4%.
- Saving period (months)
- The number of monthly compounding periods and month-end deposits before the target date; the default is 36 months.
Formula and method
r = j / (100 × 12). For r ≠ 0: T = S(1 + r)^n + D[((1 + r)^n − 1) / r], so D = max(0, [T − S(1 + r)^n] × r / [(1 + r)^n − 1]). For r = 0: D = max(0, (T − S) / n). Using the defaults: D = [25000 − 5000(1 + 0.04/12)^36] × (0.04/12) / [(1 + 0.04/12)^36 − 1] ≈ $507.15 per month.
- TTarget balance in dollars.
- SCurrent savings in dollars.
- jAnnual nominal rate entered as a percentage, such as 4 for 4%.
- rMonthly interest rate expressed as a decimal.
- nSaving period in months, which must be a positive whole number.
- DRequired equal deposit in dollars, made at the end of each month.
Convert the annual nominal percentage rate to a monthly decimal rate. Grow the current savings over the full saving period, then subtract that future value from the target. Divide the remaining amount by the future-value factor for equal month-end deposits. If the rate is zero, divide the shortfall by the number of months instead; if current savings alone are projected to meet the target, no additional deposit is required. Display the monthly deposit rounded to cents.

How to use the Savings Goal Contribution Calculator
- 1Enter your target balance; use $25,000 to follow the worked example.
- 2Enter your current savings; the example starts with $5,000.
- 3Enter the annual nominal rate as 4 for the example's 4% rate, not as 0.04.
- 4Set the saving period to 36 months for the example.
- 5Calculate and read the required monthly deposit: $507.15, paid at the end of each month.
Reading your result
The Required monthly deposit row shows the equal amount to add at each month-end to reach the target under the stated assumptions. For the default inputs, $507.15 is the monthly contribution, not the total amount saved or the interest earned. A result of $0 means the projected value of current savings already meets or exceeds the target without additional deposits.
Limitations
The calculation assumes a constant interest rate, monthly compounding, and equal deposits made at month-end, with no missed deposits or withdrawals. The annual nominal rate is divided by 12 and should not be confused with APY, which already reflects compounding. Taxes, fees, inflation, and variable investment returns are excluded. The result is a projection rather than a guaranteed investment outcome. Rounding deposits to cents can cause the final balance to differ slightly from the target.
Common questions
Why does the calculator assume deposits are made at month-end?+
Its formula uses an ordinary annuity: the first deposit earns interest for 35 months in the 36-month example, while the last deposit earns no interest before the target date. Depositing at the beginning of each month would give every deposit one extra month of growth and reduce the required amount.
Can I enter my savings account's APY as the annual nominal rate?+
Not directly if you want the rates to match precisely. For monthly compounding, convert APY to an annual nominal percentage using 1200 × [(1 + APY/100)^(1/12) − 1], then enter that result.
How does the $5,000 starting balance affect the $507.15 monthly deposit?+
The calculator first projects how the $5,000 will grow over 36 months at the 4% annual nominal rate. Your monthly deposits and their interest only need to cover the remaining portion of the $25,000 target.
What happens if my current savings will reach the target without deposits?+
The required monthly deposit is $0. The calculator does not treat a negative calculated contribution as permission to withdraw money; it simply indicates that additional deposits are unnecessary under the assumed rate and period.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
