About the Running Stride Length Calculator

The Running Stride Length Calculator estimates your average step length and full stride length from running speed in km/h and total steps per minute. It treats a step as the distance from one foot contact to the next and a full stride as two consecutive steps. With the default speed of 12 km/h and cadence of 170 steps/min, the results are a step length of 1.18 m and a full stride length of 2.35 m.

Running speed (km/h)
Your running speed in kilometres per hour, with a default of 12 km/h.
Total steps per minute (steps/min)
Your cadence counting steps from both feet in steps per minute, with a default of 170 steps/min.

Formula and method

L_step = (v × 1000) / (60 × c); L_stride = 2 × L_step. With the default inputs: L_step = (12 × 1000) / (60 × 170) ≈ 1.18 m; L_stride = 2 × (12 × 1000) / (60 × 170) ≈ 2.35 m.
  • vRunning speed in kilometres per hour (km/h).
  • cTotal cadence counting both feet, in steps per minute (steps/min).
  • L_stepAverage distance covered per step, in metres (m).
  • L_strideAverage distance covered over two consecutive steps, in metres (m).

Convert running speed from kilometres per hour to metres per minute by multiplying by 1000 and dividing by 60. Divide that distance per minute by total steps per minute to obtain average step length. Double the unrounded step length to obtain full stride length, then round each output to two decimal places.

How to use the Running Stride Length Calculator

  1. 1Enter your running speed in km/h, or keep the default of 12.
  2. 2Enter your total steps per minute counting both feet, or keep the default of 170.
  3. 3Check that speed and cadence are positive and describe the same running interval.
  4. 4Read the step length output as the average distance covered with each step.
  5. 5Read the full stride length output as the average distance covered in two steps; the default inputs give 1.18 m per step and 2.35 m per full stride.

Reading your result

The Step length row shows metres travelled per individual step: 1.18 m with the default inputs. The Full stride length (two steps) row shows metres travelled across two consecutive steps, from a contact of one foot to the next contact of that same foot: 2.35 m with the default inputs. Full stride length is calculated from the unrounded step length, so doubling the displayed step length may differ slightly from the displayed full stride length.

Limitations

These are average distance estimates, not direct measurements of individual foot placements. Speed and cadence should represent the same interval, ideally during steady running; mismatched averages, GPS error, or inaccurate step counts can distort the results. The calculator does not identify left–right differences, assess overstriding, or determine an ideal stride length for your body or training goals. Cadence must be greater than zero, and positive running speed is required for a meaningful running estimate.

Common questions

Should I enter cadence for one foot or both feet?+

Enter total steps per minute for both feet combined. If your measurement counts only one foot's contacts, double it before entering it; using a one-foot count directly would double the estimated lengths.

Why is the default full stride length 2.35 m rather than twice the displayed 1.18 m?+

At 12 km/h and 170 steps/min, the calculator retains the unrounded step length when calculating full stride length. It rounds the two outputs separately, producing 1.18 m and 2.35 m.

What happens to step length if I increase cadence while keeping speed unchanged?+

Step length decreases because the same distance per minute is divided among more steps. Full stride length decreases proportionally because it is twice the average step length.

Does a longer calculated stride mean I am running more efficiently?+

No. This calculator only describes the relationship between speed, cadence, and distance per step. It does not measure energy use, braking forces, or foot placement, so a longer result is not automatically better.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
