About the Physical Activity Level Ratio Calculator
The Physical Activity Level Ratio Calculator divides measured total daily energy expenditure by measured basal energy expenditure to calculate physical activity level (PAL). It expresses daily energy use as a multiple of basal energy needs, rather than as exercise calories alone. With the default inputs of 2500 kcal/day and 1600 kcal/day, the calculator reports a physical activity level of 1.56.
- Measured total daily energy expenditure (kcal/day)
- The total energy your body uses per day, including basal functions, activity, and digestion, measured in kcal/day; the default is 2500.
- Measured basal energy expenditure (kcal/day)
- The daily energy required to maintain essential body functions under basal conditions, measured in kcal/day; the default is 1600.
Formula and method
PAL = TDEE / BEE; with the default inputs, PAL = 2500 / 1600 = 1.5625, displayed as 1.56.
- PALPhysical activity level, a dimensionless ratio of total daily energy expenditure to basal energy expenditure.
- TDEEMeasured total daily energy expenditure in kcal/day.
- BEEMeasured basal energy expenditure in kcal/day.
Divide measured total daily energy expenditure by measured basal energy expenditure, then round the resulting ratio to two decimal places for display. Because both inputs use kcal/day, the units cancel. Basal energy expenditure must be greater than zero for the division to be valid.

- Measured total daily energy expenditure2500 kcal/day
- Measured basal energy expenditure1600 kcal/day
Results
- Physical activity level1.56
- NoteApproximation; individual results vary.
How to use the Physical Activity Level Ratio Calculator
- 1Obtain total daily and basal energy expenditure measurements that represent the same person and a comparable period.
- 2Enter measured total daily energy expenditure in kcal/day, or retain the default of 2500.
- 3Enter measured basal energy expenditure in kcal/day, or retain the default of 1600; this value must be greater than zero.
- 4Calculate the ratio: with the defaults, divide 2500 by 1600 to obtain 1.5625, displayed as 1.56.
- 5Read the physical activity level and the approximation note together, taking measurement uncertainty and daily variation into account.
Reading your result
The 'Physical activity level' row shows the dimensionless ratio of total daily energy use to basal energy use. The default result of 1.56 means total daily expenditure is approximately 1.56 times basal expenditure; it is not a percentage or a calorie amount. The 'Note' row reads 'Approximation; individual results vary.' This reminds you that the calculated ratio depends on the measurements supplied and may change across days or measurement methods.
Limitations
This tool calculates a ratio; it does not measure energy expenditure or verify the accuracy of the inputs. Both measurements should use the same units and represent comparable conditions. Basal energy expenditure is measured under strict basal conditions and is not automatically interchangeable with resting energy expenditure. Total daily expenditure includes digestion and other non-exercise energy use, so PAL does not isolate exercise effort. Rounding, measurement error, and day-to-day variation affect interpretation, and the result alone does not establish fitness, health status, or a calorie-intake target.
Common questions
Why do the default inputs produce a physical activity level of 1.56?+
Dividing total daily energy expenditure of 2500 kcal/day by basal energy expenditure of 1600 kcal/day gives 1.5625. Rounded to two decimal places, the displayed result is 1.56.
Can I enter exercise calories instead of total daily energy expenditure?+
No. The numerator must include all daily energy expenditure, including basal functions, digestion, and physical activity. Exercise calories alone would not produce the PAL ratio this calculator is designed to calculate.
Can I substitute resting energy expenditure for basal energy expenditure?+
Doing so produces a ratio relative to resting expenditure rather than strictly basal expenditure. Because the measurement conditions differ, use measured basal expenditure for the intended PAL calculation and do not treat the two ratios as identical.
What if my calculated PAL is below 1?+
That means the entered total daily expenditure is lower than the entered basal expenditure. This is unexpected for comparable full-day measurements, so check for mismatched units, time periods, measurement methods, or data-entry errors before interpreting it.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
