About the Percentile Rank Calculator
The Percentile Rank Calculator measures where a target value stands within a supplied dataset, counting values below the target fully and values equal to it with half weight. For the default values 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and target value 6, it returns a percentile rank of 50%.
- Values
- Enter the numerical observations to compare, separated by commas; all values must use the same units, or all be unitless.
- Target value
- Enter the value whose percentile rank you want to calculate, using the same units as the observations.
Formula and method
PR = 100 × (B + 0.5 × E) / N
- PRPercentile rank of the target, expressed as a percentage.
- BNumber of observations strictly below the target value.
- ENumber of observations equal to the target value.
- NTotal number of observations in Values, including repeated values.
Count all observations, then count those strictly below the target and those equal to it. Add half the equal count to the below count, divide by the total count, and multiply by 100. With 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and target 6, B = 2, E = 1, and N = 5, so PR = 100 × (2 + 0.5 × 1) / 5 = 50%.

How to use the Percentile Rank Calculator
- 1Enter 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 in Values to reproduce the default example.
- 2Enter 6 in Target value.
- 3Check that the list contains all intended observations, retaining any genuine repeats.
- 4Run the calculation to count values below and equal to the target and apply half weight to ties.
- 5Read the Percentile rank (%) output: the default example returns 50.
Reading your result
The Percentile rank (%) row reports the percentage of observations below the target plus half the percentage equal to it. A result of 50 for target 6 means it is at the midpoint of the default dataset under this convention; it does not mean that exactly 50% of observations are strictly below 6. Higher results indicate a higher position relative to the supplied values, not necessarily a better outcome.
Limitations
The dataset must contain at least one valid numerical observation. Every observation receives equal weight, including duplicates, and ties are based on numerical equality rather than approximate similarity. Percentile-rank conventions differ, so methods counting only values below the target or all values at or below it can give different results. This result describes only the supplied dataset and is not automatically a population percentile or a clinical reference percentile. The target is not added to the dataset automatically.
Common questions
Why does target 6 have a percentile rank of 50% for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10?+
Two observations are below 6 and one equals it. Half weight for that equal observation gives 100 × (2 + 0.5) / 5 = 50%.
How does this calculator handle repeated values equal to the target?+
Every matching observation contributes half an observation to the numerator and one observation to the total count. All occurrences of the same target therefore receive the same percentile rank.
Can I calculate the percentile rank of a target not present in Values?+
Yes. When no observation equals the target, E is zero, so the result is simply the percentage of observations strictly below it. The target is not counted as an additional observation.
Will the smallest and largest observations always rank at 0% and 100%?+
No. A target equal to an observed minimum or maximum receives half weight for its matches, putting its rank above 0% or below 100%, respectively. A target strictly below every observation returns 0%, while one strictly above every observation returns 100%.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
