About the Ovulation Calculator

This calculator predicts the estimated ovulation day and fertile window for your next three menstrual cycles. It is designed for individuals tracking their reproductive cycle to plan conception or understand their cycle timing based on standard luteal phase assumptions.

First day of last period
The calendar start date of bleeding for your most recent menstrual cycle.
Cycle length
The total number of days between the start of one period and the start of the next, typically between 21 and 35 days (default is 28 days).

Formula and method

O_i = LMP + [(i + 1) × C - 14] days; Fertile Window = [O_i - 5 days, O_i + 1 day]
  • LMPFirst day of the last menstrual period
  • CAverage menstrual cycle length in days
  • iCycle index (0 for Cycle 1, 1 for Cycle 2, and 2 for Cycle 3)
  • O_iPredicted ovulation date for cycle i

The calculation assumes a constant 14-day luteal phase, placing ovulation 14 days before the start of each subsequent cycle. For each of the three cycles, the 6-day pre-ovulation span plus the day after ovulation (a 7-day total fertile window) is projected forward from the last menstrual period date.

How to use the Ovulation Calculator

  1. 1Multiply the cycle length by the cycle number to determine the projected start of the next cycle.
  2. 2Subtract 14 days from that date to identify the estimated ovulation date.
  3. 3Subtract 5 days from the ovulation date to mark the start of the fertile window.
  4. 4Add 1 day to the ovulation date to mark the end of the fertile window, then repeat for cycles two and three.

Reading your result

Each cycle displays an estimated ovulation date alongside a 7-day fertile window. Conception is biologically most likely during the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, with the window closing roughly 24 hours afterward.

Limitations

This tool relies on a fixed 14-day luteal phase and an unchanging cycle length, but actual ovulation timing often fluctuates due to stress, illness, hormonal variations, or irregular cycles. It does not measure physiological indicators such as basal body temperature or luteinizing hormone surges.

Common questions

Why does the calculator subtract 14 days to find ovulation?+

In clinical obstetrics and gynecology, the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the next period) is commonly standardized to 14 days, making the projected ovulation day equal to cycle length minus 14.

Why is the fertile window 7 days long?+

Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while an unfertilized egg typically survives for 12 to 24 hours after release. The window spans 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after to capture this viable timeframe.

Can I use this calculator as a reliable method of birth control?+

No. Standard calendar-based calculations do not account for natural cycle irregularities and should not be used as a standalone contraceptive method.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
