About the Overweight Calculator

The Overweight Calculator determines your Body Mass Index (BMI) and calculates how much weight you carry above the standard upper limit of the healthy BMI range. It is designed for adults looking to evaluate their current body weight against standard health benchmarks.

Height
Standing height in centimeters (cm), typically between 120 cm and 220 cm.
Weight
Current total body weight in kilograms (kg), typically between 30 kg and 250 kg.

Formula and method

m = Height / 100
BMI = Weight / m²
Healthy Max Weight = 24.9 × m²
Above healthy max = Weight − Healthy Max Weight
  • mHeight converted from centimeters to meters
  • BMIBody Mass Index in kg/m²
  • Healthy Max WeightThe maximum body weight in kg corresponding to a normal BMI of 24.9
  • Above healthy maxExcess weight in kilograms exceeding the BMI 24.9 threshold

The tool converts height into meters, calculates BMI by dividing weight by height squared, and calculates the maximum weight boundary for a normal BMI cutoff of 24.9. If current weight exceeds this threshold, the difference is rounded to one decimal place and displayed in kilograms; otherwise, it reports 'Within healthy range'.

How to use the Overweight Calculator

  1. 1Divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters.
  2. 2Calculate current BMI by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters.
  3. 3Calculate the upper normal weight threshold by multiplying 24.9 by height in meters squared.
  4. 4Subtract the upper normal threshold from current weight to determine excess kilograms, or display 'Within healthy range' if the difference is zero or negative.

Reading your result

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 falls within the standard normal weight range, returning 'Within healthy range'. If your BMI is 25.0 or greater, the calculator reports the specific number of kilograms you are carrying above the 24.9 BMI boundary.

Limitations

The calculation relies solely on height and total weight, without distinguishing between lean muscle mass, bone density, and body fat percentage. It uses standard adult BMI cutoffs and does not adjust for age, sex, pregnancy, or athletic body composition.

Common questions

Why does the calculator use 24.9 as the healthy threshold?+

Major health organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the CDC, define the standard normal adult BMI range as 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m², with 25.0 marking the start of the overweight category.

What does it mean if the calculator says 'Within healthy range'?+

It means your calculated BMI is 24.9 or lower, indicating that your weight does not exceed the upper limit of the standard healthy weight category for your height.

Can someone with high muscle mass be classified as above healthy max?+

Yes. Because BMI cannot separate muscle mass from fat mass, muscular individuals or athletes may be calculated as above the normal BMI threshold despite having low body fat.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
