About the Mass Calculator

The Mass Calculator computes the total physical mass of an object or substance based on its density and volume. It is used by students, engineers, and machinists to determine the weight in grams of a given material size before fabrication or weighing.

Density
The mass per unit volume of the substance, entered in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). For solid materials, this value is typically positive (e.g., steel is around 7.85 g/cm³).
Volume
The three-dimensional space occupied by the object, entered in cubic centimeters (cm³). Sensible inputs are non-negative values.

Formula and method

Mass = Density × Volume
  • MassCalculated total mass in grams (g)
  • DensityMaterial density in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³)
  • VolumeObject volume in cubic centimeters (cm³)

The tool directly multiplies the input density (in g/cm³) by the input volume (in cm³). The resulting product is expressed in grams and rounded to three decimal places.

How to use the Mass Calculator

  1. 1Identify the density of the material in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³).
  2. 2Determine the total volume of the object in cubic centimeters (cm³).
  3. 3Multiply the density value by the volume value.
  4. 4Read the final calculated mass in grams, displayed to three decimal places.

Reading your result

The result displays the mass of the object in grams (g). If you know the volume of an enclosure or part, multiplying it by its material density yields the exact static mass. To convert the result to kilograms, divide the displayed gram total by 1,000.

Limitations

This calculation assumes a completely uniform density throughout the entire volume without voids, air pockets, or composite layering. It does not perform automatic unit conversions for volumes entered in liters or cubic inches, nor does it factor in temperature-dependent density shifts.

Common questions

What unit does this calculator output?+

Because the inputs are calibrated in g/cm³ for density and cm³ for volume, the cubic centimeters cancel out directly, producing the final answer in grams (g).

How can I convert the resulting mass to kilograms?+

Divide the result in grams by 1,000 to obtain the mass in kilograms (kg).

What happens if my volume is measured in liters?+

You must convert liters to cubic centimeters first (1 liter equals 1,000 cm³) before entering the value into this calculator.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
