About the Kite Area Calculator
The Kite Area Calculator finds the area of a kite using the lengths of its two perpendicular diagonals. It multiplies those lengths and divides by two, so the default diagonals of 10 and 6 give an area of 30 square units.
- First diagonal
- The length of one segment joining opposite vertices of the kite, defaulting to 10 and measured in the same length unit as the second diagonal.
- Second diagonal
- The length of the other segment joining opposite vertices of the kite, defaulting to 6 and measured in the same length unit as the first diagonal.
Formula and method
A = (d₁ × d₂) / 2; with the default inputs, A = (10 × 6) / 2 = 30 square units.
- AArea of the kite, expressed in square units.
- d₁Length of the first full diagonal.
- d₂Length of the second full diagonal, perpendicular to the first.
Multiply the two full diagonal lengths, then divide their product by two. The perpendicular diagonals divide a convex kite into right triangles whose areas add to half the product of the diagonals. For the default inputs, 10 × 6 = 60, and 60 / 2 = 30.

How to use the Kite Area Calculator
- 1Identify the kite’s two diagonals: the segments connecting opposite vertices, not its sides.
- 2Measure both full diagonals and convert them to the same length unit if necessary.
- 3Enter the First diagonal length; keep 10 to follow the default example.
- 4Enter the Second diagonal length; keep 6 to follow the default example, then calculate.
- 5Read the result as an area in square units: the default inputs produce 30.
Reading your result
The Result row reports the kite’s area, not its perimeter or a diagonal length. With First diagonal = 10 and Second diagonal = 6, Result = 30 square units. If both lengths are in centimeters, the result is 30 cm²; if both are in meters, it is 30 m².
Limitations
This calculation assumes a simple, convex kite with perpendicular diagonals and uses each diagonal’s full length. Both lengths must be positive and expressed in the same unit; zero gives a degenerate shape, and negative lengths are not geometrically valid. The calculator cannot verify the shape or perpendicularity from two lengths alone. For a quadrilateral with nonperpendicular diagonals, the angle between them is also needed. Accuracy depends on the accuracy of the measurements.
Common questions
Do I enter the kite’s side lengths or its diagonal lengths?+
Enter the full diagonal lengths, measured between opposite vertices. Side lengths cannot be substituted directly into A = (d₁ × d₂) / 2.
Does it matter which diagonal of the kite I enter first?+
No. Multiplication gives the same product in either order, so entering 10 and 6 or 6 and 10 gives an area of 30 square units.
Why is the product of the kite’s diagonals divided by two?+
The perpendicular diagonals split a convex kite into right triangles. Adding their areas gives half the product of the full diagonals, so the default product of 60 becomes an area of 30.
Can this calculator find the area of a rhombus?+
Yes. A rhombus also has perpendicular diagonals, so the same half-product formula applies when you enter its two full diagonal lengths in matching units.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
