About the Future Value Calculator

The Future Value Calculator determines how much an initial lump-sum investment will grow over time alongside consistent annual contributions. It is used by savers and investors to project portfolio growth, set long-term financial targets, or evaluate compounding returns over a fixed horizon.

Present value
The starting balance or initial lump sum invested today, measured in dollars (e.g., $0 to $1,000,000+).
Annual payment
The recurring amount deposited at the end of each year, measured in dollars (e.g., $0 to $100,000+).
Rate
The expected annual nominal interest rate or investment growth rate as a percentage (e.g., 1% to 15%).
Years
The total duration of the investment period in whole or fractional years (e.g., 1 to 50).

Formula and method

FV = PV × (1 + r)^n + PMT × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r]
  • FVFuture value of the investment
  • PVPresent value (initial principal)
  • rAnnual interest rate expressed as a decimal (Rate / 100)
  • nNumber of years
  • PMTAnnual payment amount deposited at the end of each year

The tool converts the percentage rate into a decimal and calculates future value using the standard compound interest and ordinary annuity formulas. The initial lump sum compounds annually over the total duration, while annual deposits are treated as end-of-year contributions and compounded accordingly before formatting the total as standard currency.

How to use the Future Value Calculator

  1. 1Divide the annual interest rate by 100 to convert it into a decimal rate r.
  2. 2Compound the present value over n years by calculating PV × (1 + r)^n.
  3. 3Calculate the accumulated future value of the annual contributions using PMT × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r].
  4. 4Add the compounded present value to the accumulated payments to determine total future value.

Reading your result

The single output represents the total accumulated balance at the end of the specified time frame, combining your principal, regular contributions, and compounded interest. Comparing this total to the sum of your actual out-of-pocket deposits highlights the earnings generated strictly through compound interest.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a constant annual rate of return with annual compounding and deposits occurring strictly at year-end. It does not account for monthly compounding, fluctuating market returns, management fees, taxes, or purchasing power loss from inflation.

Common questions

Does this calculator assume payments occur at the beginning or end of the year?+

It uses the ordinary annuity formula, which assumes annual contributions are deposited at the end of each annual period.

What future value do I get with a 0% interest rate?+

Without interest, no compounding takes place; the future value is simply the initial present value plus total annual payments (PV + PMT × n).

Can I use this for monthly contributions?+

This specific tool operates on annual periods. Entering monthly figures without converting the rate and term into matching monthly intervals will produce an inaccurate projection.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
