About the Effective Annual Yield Calculator

The Effective Annual Yield Calculator converts a nominal annual interest rate into an effective annual rate using your chosen number of compounding periods per year. It shows how earning interest on previously credited interest changes the annual yield. With the default nominal annual rate of 5% and 12 compounds per year, the effective annual yield is 5.12%.

Nominal annual rate (%)
The quoted annual interest rate before accounting for compounding within the year, entered as a percentage with a default of 5%.
Compounds per year (times)
The number of equally spaced times interest is compounded each year, entered as a positive whole number with a default of 12 for monthly compounding.

Formula and method

Y = 100 × [(1 + r / (100 × n))^n − 1]; with the defaults, Y = 100 × [(1 + 5 / (100 × 12))^12 − 1] ≈ 5.12%.
  • YEffective annual yield, expressed as a percentage.
  • rNominal annual rate entered as a percentage, so the default value is 5.
  • nNumber of compounding periods per year, with a default value of 12.

The calculator divides the nominal percentage rate by 100 to convert it to a decimal, then divides by the number of compounding periods to find the periodic rate. It adds 1 to that rate and raises the result to the number of periods in one year. Finally, it subtracts 1 and multiplies by 100 to express the effective annual yield as a percentage, rounded to two decimal places.

How to use the Effective Annual Yield Calculator

  1. 1Enter the nominal annual rate as a percentage; leave it at 5 to follow the default example.
  2. 2Enter the number of compounds per year; leave it at 12 to use monthly compounding.
  3. 3Confirm that the rate is nominal rather than an already effective annual rate or APY.
  4. 4Run the calculation using the entered rate and compounding frequency.
  5. 5Read the effective annual yield: the default inputs produce 5.12%.

Reading your result

The Effective annual yield output row gives the annual percentage growth attributable to interest, including interest earned on earlier interest credits. For the default inputs, 5.12% is the rounded effective yield from a 5% nominal annual rate compounded 12 times per year. It is an annual rate, not a monthly rate or a monetary interest amount.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a fixed nominal rate, equally spaced compounding periods, and interest that remains invested throughout the year. It excludes fees, taxes, inflation, deposits, and withdrawals. Actual account yields may differ because of daily-balance methods, day-count conventions, or rounding rules. Use a positive whole number for the compounding frequency; zero is invalid, and continuous compounding requires a different formula. The displayed yield is rounded and does not guarantee an investment return.

Common questions

Why does a 5% nominal annual rate produce a 5.12% effective annual yield?+

With 12 compounds per year, interest credited during the year earns additional interest in later months. The formula 100 × [(1 + 5 / (100 × 12))^12 − 1] gives an annual yield that rounds to 5.12%.

Should I enter an advertised APY as the nominal annual rate?+

No. APY already accounts for compounding, so entering it as a nominal rate would apply compounding again. Use the stated nominal annual interest rate and its corresponding compounding frequency.

What happens if interest compounds only once per year?+

The effective annual yield equals the nominal annual rate because there is no within-year compounding. For a positive nominal rate, increasing the compounding frequency increases the effective annual yield.

Does this calculator tell me how much interest I will earn in money?+

No. It returns an annual percentage yield and does not take a starting balance. To estimate one year's interest on an unchanged balance under the same assumptions, multiply that balance by the unrounded effective annual yield divided by 100.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
