About the Conicity Index Calculator
The Conicity Index Calculator calculates the Valdez conicity index from body weight, height and waist circumference. It compares waist size with a reference based on weight and height to describe abdominal body shape. The result is an educational estimate for adults, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.
- Body weight (kg)
- Your body weight in kilograms; the default is 75 kg.
- Height (cm)
- Your standing height in centimeters; the default is 175 cm.
- Waist circumference (cm)
- The circumference around your waist in centimeters; the default is 85 cm.
Formula and method
CI = W / (0.109 × √(M / H)), where W and H are in meters and M is in kilograms. With the default inputs: CI = (85 / 100) / (0.109 × √(75 / (175 / 100))) = 1.191, rounded to three decimal places.
- CIValdez conicity index, reported as a dimensionless value.
- WWaist circumference in meters, obtained by dividing the entered centimeters by 100.
- MBody weight in kilograms.
- HHeight in meters, obtained by dividing the entered centimeters by 100.
- 0.109The Valdez formula's reference coefficient, used with weight in kilograms and height and waist in meters.
Convert height and waist circumference from centimeters to meters, leaving weight in kilograms. Divide weight by height, take the square root, and multiply by 0.109 to obtain the reference waist value. Divide measured waist circumference by that reference value and round the resulting index to three decimal places.
Worked example
These are the calculator's starting values and the results it actually produces for them.
Inputs
- Body weight75 kg
- Height175 cm
- Waist circumference85 cm
Results
- Conicity index1.191
- NoteEducational estimate for adults; not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.
How to use the Conicity Index Calculator
- 1Enter your body weight in kilograms, using 75 for the worked example.
- 2Enter your height in centimeters, using 175 for the worked example.
- 3Enter your waist circumference in centimeters, using 85 for the worked example; keep the measuring tape horizontal and snug without compressing the skin.
- 4Run the calculation with positive values for all three measurements.
- 5Read the conicity index and accompanying note; the default inputs produce 1.191.
Reading your result
The “Conicity index” row shows the calculated ratio: 1.191 for a weight of 75 kg, height of 175 cm and waist circumference of 85 cm. A higher index indicates a larger waist relative to the weight-and-height reference, consistent with greater abdominal concentration of body size. The number is not a body-fat percentage or a standalone health-risk classification. The “Note” row states: “Educational estimate for adults; not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.”
Limitations
The index is based on a simplified geometric model and does not directly measure visceral fat, total body fat or metabolic health. Waist measurement location, tape tension and measurement errors can affect the result, so use a consistent measurement protocol when tracking changes. Interpretation varies across populations, and this calculator does not apply a universal diagnostic cutoff. Its adult educational framing should not be assumed appropriate for children, pregnancy or conditions that substantially alter abdominal size.
Common questions
Why does the calculator convert waist and height from centimeters to meters?+
The coefficient 0.109 is intended for waist and height in meters and weight in kilograms. The calculator converts the default waist of 85 cm to 0.85 m and height of 175 cm to 1.75 m before applying the formula.
Is a conicity index of 1.191 a body-fat percentage?+
No. It is a dimensionless ratio comparing measured waist circumference with a reference derived from weight and height. It does not mean 19.1% body fat or provide another direct body-fat estimate.
How is the conicity index different from waist-to-height ratio?+
Waist-to-height ratio divides waist circumference directly by height in matching units. The conicity index instead divides waist circumference by 0.109 × √(weight / height), so body weight also affects the result.
Does a result of 1.191 diagnose abdominal obesity?+
No. This calculator reports the index without assigning a diagnostic category. Any health-risk interpretation requires appropriate population-specific evidence and consideration of other measurements and clinical factors.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
