About the Bond Current Yield Calculator

The Bond Current Yield Calculator measures a bond’s annual coupon income as a percentage of its market price. It uses face value and annual coupon rate to calculate coupon income, then divides that income by the price you enter. This tool calculates current yield, not yield to maturity.

Face value ($)
The bond’s nominal principal amount in dollars, used to calculate coupon income, with a default of $1000.
Annual coupon rate (%)
The annual coupon interest rate expressed as a percentage of face value, with a default of 5%.
Market price ($)
The dollar price of the same bond amount represented by the face value, with a default of $950.

Formula and method

C = F × (r / 100); Y = (C / P) × 100. With the default inputs: C = $1000 × (5 / 100) = $50.00; Y = ($50.00 / $950) × 100 = 5.26% (rounded).
  • FFace value of the bond in dollars.
  • rAnnual coupon rate entered as a percentage.
  • CAnnual coupon income in dollars.
  • PMarket price of the bond in dollars.
  • YCurrent yield expressed as a percentage.

Convert the annual coupon rate from a percentage to a decimal and multiply it by face value to determine annual coupon income. Divide annual coupon income by market price, then multiply by 100 to express current yield as a percentage. Use unrounded values during calculation and round the displayed income and yield to two decimal places.

How to use the Bond Current Yield Calculator

  1. 1Enter the bond’s face value in dollars; the default is $1000.
  2. 2Enter the annual coupon rate as a percentage; the default is 5.
  3. 3Enter the market price in dollars for that same face value; the default is $950, and the price must be greater than zero.
  4. 4Run the calculation to obtain annual coupon income and current yield.
  5. 5With the default inputs, confirm annual coupon income of $50.00 and current yield of 5.26%.

Reading your result

The Annual coupon income row shows the total scheduled coupon interest for one year: $50.00 with the default inputs, regardless of how many payments occur during the year. The Current yield row shows that income relative to the entered market price: 5.26% at a price of $950. This yield is above the 5% coupon rate because the market price is below the $1000 face value; it is not a forecast of total return.

Limitations

The calculation assumes a fixed annual coupon rate and that scheduled coupons are paid. It excludes gains or losses at sale or redemption, time to maturity, reinvestment, compounding, taxes, fees, and default risk. It does not calculate yield to maturity or yield to call. Accrued interest is not calculated separately; using a quoted price that excludes accrued interest means the denominator may differ from the actual purchase outlay. Face value and market price must refer to the same bond amount, and market price must be positive.

Common questions

Why is the default current yield 5.26% when the coupon rate is 5%?+

The 5% coupon rate applies to the $1000 face value, producing $50.00 in annual coupon income. Current yield divides that $50.00 by the lower $950 market price, giving 5.26% after rounding.

Should I adjust the coupon rate if the bond pays interest semiannually?+

No. Enter the annual coupon rate, not the rate per payment. The calculator uses total annual coupon income, so payment frequency does not change its current-yield calculation.

Does the current yield include the gain from buying below face value?+

No. With the default inputs, the difference between the $950 purchase price and $1000 face value is not included as income. Yield to maturity would account for repayment at maturity and the timing of cash flows, assuming scheduled payments are made.

Can I enter a market quote expressed as a percentage of par?+

Not directly. The Market price ($) field requires dollars for the face value entered. Convert a percentage-of-par quote to dollars by multiplying face value by the quoted percentage divided by 100.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
