About the Body Roundness Index Calculator

The Body Roundness Index Calculator uses waist circumference and height to estimate body roundness with a geometric formula. It provides a dimensionless index without requiring body weight. With the default height of 175 cm and waist circumference of 85 cm, the body roundness index is 3.09.

Height (cm)
Your standing height without shoes, measured in centimeters; the default is 175 cm.
Waist circumference (cm)
The circumference around your waist, measured in centimeters with a level tape that does not compress the skin; the default is 85 cm.

Formula and method

BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × √[1 − ((W / (2π)) / (H / 2))²] = 364.2 − 365.5 × √[1 − (W / (πH))²]. For the default inputs: BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × √[1 − (85 / (π × 175))²] ≈ 3.09.
  • BRIBody roundness index, a dimensionless estimate of body shape.
  • WWaist circumference in centimeters.
  • HStanding height in centimeters.
  • πPi, approximately 3.14159.

The calculator divides waist circumference by π times height, squares that ratio, subtracts it from 1, and takes the square root. It multiplies the result by 365.5 and subtracts that product from 364.2. The final index is rounded to two decimal places; intermediate values should remain unrounded.

How to use the Body Roundness Index Calculator

  1. 1Measure your standing height without shoes and enter it in Height (cm).
  2. 2Measure your waist with a level tape after a normal exhalation, without pulling the tape tightly, and enter it in Waist circumference (cm).
  3. 3Check that both measurements are positive and entered in centimeters.
  4. 4Run the calculation; using 175 cm for height and 85 cm for waist circumference gives a body roundness index of 3.09.
  5. 5Read the index together with the educational note rather than treating it as a diagnosis.

Reading your result

The “Body roundness index” row displays the dimensionless result: 3.09 for the default inputs. A higher value indicates a larger waist relative to height, while a lower value indicates a smaller waist relative to height; neither value alone establishes health status. The “Note” row states: “Educational estimate for adults; not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.”

Limitations

BRI models body shape using only waist circumference and height; it does not directly measure body fat percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, or overall health. Results depend on measurement accuracy and the waist measurement site, so use a consistent protocol for comparisons over time. This tool provides no diagnostic thresholds and should not be used to assess children or pregnancy-related body changes. Mathematically, height must be positive and W must not exceed πH for the square root to be real; mathematically valid inputs are not necessarily physiologically plausible.

Common questions

Why does this BRI calculator not ask for body weight?+

The BRI formula uses the geometric relationship between waist circumference and height. Unlike BMI, it does not include weight, so people with the same height and waist circumference receive the same BRI even if their weights differ.

Does a BRI of 3.09 mean my body fat is 3.09%?+

No. The result of 3.09 from a height of 175 cm and waist circumference of 85 cm is a dimensionless index, not a body fat percentage.

Can this calculator tell me whether my BRI is healthy?+

No. It calculates body roundness but does not assign a healthy or unhealthy category. Interpreting health risk requires additional information, such as medical history, blood pressure, and relevant clinical measurements.

Why can my BRI change when I measure my waist again?+

Tape position, tape tension, breathing, and temporary abdominal changes can alter the waist measurement. Since BRI depends on waist relative to height, these differences can change the result even when height stays constant.

Does the calculator save my information?+

Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
