About the Absolute Oxygen Consumption Calculator
The Absolute Oxygen Consumption Calculator converts relative oxygen consumption in mL/kg/min into total oxygen consumption in liters per minute using body weight. With a body weight of 75 kg and relative oxygen consumption of 40 mL/kg/min, it calculates an absolute oxygen consumption of 3 L/min.
- Body weight (kg)
- Your body mass in kilograms, used to convert oxygen consumption per kilogram into a whole-body rate; the default is 75 kg.
- Relative oxygen consumption (mL/kg/min)
- The volume of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body mass each minute, expressed in mL/kg/min; the default is 40 mL/kg/min.
Formula and method
VO₂_absolute = (VO₂_relative × m) / 1000; with the defaults: (40 × 75) / 1000 = 3 L/min.
- VO₂_absoluteAbsolute oxygen consumption in liters per minute (L/min).
- VO₂_relativeRelative oxygen consumption in milliliters per kilogram per minute (mL/kg/min).
- mBody weight in kilograms (kg).
- 1000The number of milliliters in one liter, used to convert mL/min to L/min.
Multiply relative oxygen consumption by body weight to cancel the per-kilogram unit and obtain mL/min. Divide by 1000 to express that rate in L/min. For the default inputs, 40 mL/kg/min × 75 kg = 3000 mL/min, which equals 3 L/min.

How to use the Absolute Oxygen Consumption Calculator
- 1Enter body weight in kilograms, or keep the default of 75 kg.
- 2Enter relative oxygen consumption in mL/kg/min, or keep the default of 40 mL/kg/min.
- 3Check that the oxygen consumption value and body weight refer to the same person and measurement context.
- 4Run the calculation to convert the relative rate into an absolute rate.
- 5Read the absolute oxygen consumption result in L/min; the default inputs produce 3 L/min.
Reading your result
The absolute oxygen consumption output reports the total volume of oxygen consumed by the body each minute, in L/min. A result of 3 L/min means oxygen is being consumed at a rate of 3 liters per minute under the conditions represented by the input. This is oxygen uptake, not the total volume of air breathed, and it is not automatically a VO₂max value.
Limitations
This tool performs a unit conversion, not a measurement or independent prediction of oxygen consumption. Accuracy depends on the supplied relative oxygen consumption and body weight; use a positive body weight and a nonnegative oxygen consumption value. The result represents VO₂max only if the relative input is a valid VO₂max measurement or estimate. Absolute oxygen consumption alone does not establish fitness level or support direct fitness comparisons between people of different body sizes.
Common questions
Why does the calculator multiply by body weight and then divide by 1000?+
Relative oxygen consumption is expressed per kilogram, so multiplying by weight in kg gives total mL/min. Dividing by 1000 converts milliliters to liters.
How do the default inputs produce 3 L/min?+
Multiplying 40 mL/kg/min by 75 kg gives 3000 mL/min. Dividing 3000 by 1000 gives 3 L/min.
Can I enter a relative VO₂max value?+
Yes. If the input is relative VO₂max in mL/kg/min, the result is the corresponding absolute VO₂max in L/min. An oxygen consumption value measured at a submaximal workload instead produces an absolute rate for that workload.
Does a higher absolute oxygen consumption always mean better fitness?+
No. At the same relative oxygen consumption, a heavier person has a higher absolute value because body weight is part of the conversion. Fitness comparisons also require context such as body size, workload, and whether the values represent maximal effort.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
