About the A Body Shape Index Calculator
The A Body Shape Index Calculator calculates raw ABSI from body weight, height, and waist circumference. It adjusts waist circumference for BMI and height to describe abdominal size relative to overall body size. This tool reports raw ABSI only; it does not calculate an age-standardized score or an individual health-risk category.
- Body weight (kg)
- Your body weight in kilograms, used with height to calculate BMI; the default is 75 kg.
- Height (cm)
- Your standing height in centimeters, converted to meters for the calculation; the default is 175 cm.
- Waist circumference (cm)
- The circumference around your waist in centimeters, converted to meters for the calculation; the default is 85 cm.
Formula and method
h = H / 100; w = C / 100; BMI = W / h²; ABSI = w / (BMI^(2/3) × h^(1/2)). With the default inputs: ABSI = 0.85 / ((75 / 1.75²)^(2/3) × 1.75^(1/2)) ≈ 0.07619.
- WBody weight in kilograms.
- HHeight entered in centimeters.
- CWaist circumference entered in centimeters.
- hHeight converted to meters.
- wWaist circumference converted to meters.
- BMIBody mass index, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
- ABSIA Body Shape Index, calculated using waist circumference in meters, BMI, and height in meters.
The calculator converts height and waist circumference from centimeters to meters, then calculates BMI from weight and height. It divides waist circumference by BMI raised to the two-thirds power multiplied by the square root of height. Using 75 kg, 175 cm, and 85 cm produces a raw ABSI of approximately 0.07619, displayed to five decimal places.

Inputs
- Body weight75 kg
- Height175 cm
- Waist circumference85 cm
Results
- ABSI0.07619
- NoteRaw ABSI only; age-specific reference data are required for risk interpretation.
How to use the A Body Shape Index Calculator
- 1Enter your body weight in kilograms; the default is 75.
- 2Enter your height in centimeters; the default is 175.
- 3Enter your waist circumference in centimeters; the default is 85.
- 4Run the calculation to obtain raw ABSI; the default inputs give 0.07619.
- 5Read the accompanying note before interpreting the result: age-specific reference data are required for risk interpretation.
Reading your result
The ABSI row shows the raw index: 0.07619 for the default inputs. A higher raw ABSI represents a larger waist relative to the BMI-and-height adjustment, but it does not by itself establish a health-risk category. The Note row states: "Raw ABSI only; age-specific reference data are required for risk interpretation." This means the displayed value is not an age-adjusted z-score, percentile, or probability of disease.
Limitations
All inputs must be positive and entered in the specified units. Waist measurement technique can affect the result, so use a consistent anatomical measurement site and keep the tape horizontal without compressing the skin. Raw ABSI is not a direct measurement of visceral fat or a diagnosis. Risk interpretation requires appropriate reference data, generally accounting for age and sex, and consideration of other clinical factors. Adult ABSI findings should not automatically be applied to children, pregnancy, or populations not represented in the reference data.
Common questions
Is an ABSI of 0.07619 healthy?+
This calculator cannot classify 0.07619 as healthy or unhealthy. It is the raw result for 75 kg, 175 cm, and an 85 cm waist; interpretation requires suitable age-specific reference data and clinical context.
Why does ABSI need body weight and height if it describes waist size?+
Weight and height are used to calculate BMI, and height also appears separately in the ABSI denominator. These adjustments express waist circumference relative to overall body size rather than reporting waist size alone.
Should I enter my waist and height in meters?+
No. Enter both in centimeters: 85 for the default waist circumference and 175 for the default height. The calculator converts them to 0.85 m and 1.75 m internally.
Does this calculator provide an ABSI z-score?+
No. A z-score requires a reference mean and standard deviation appropriate to the person's demographic group. This tool accepts only weight, height, and waist circumference, so it reports raw ABSI only.
Does the calculator save my information?+
Calculations run in your browser. While signed in, inputs and results are automatically recorded in account history; saving a result creates a separate saved record.
